"Call off Christmas!"

Simple things make me happy, and I do not know why I had not thought about this until now, in that although my tiny 12L electric convection oven in my campervan is too small even for a small chicken, I can roast smaller birds such as poussin/guinea fowl/patridge/grouse/quails/etc., woo hoo!

And I can slow-cook a chunk of beef short rib the next day.

DK :kiss2:

A kettle BBQ if you have storage for it ?
Our best Christmases were camping just the two of us eatting eye fillet steak
I grew up with most Christmas dinners just the 4 of us although my closest aunty uncle would visit for morning tea
Its hot here at Christmas and new potato season so we have salads and maybe cold roast meat cooked the day before

I'm honestly worried about a spike in COVID with family gatherings and travel, especially affecting older folks. Society has shown that people don't have the discipline to stay at home, especially over long weekends. No one is going to be able to resist spending time with families over the holidays.

Friends and god kids in LA for Christmas. Each godkid will bring someone - one best friend and one partner - and a friend of ours will join us as well. 11 of us in total.. We'll do a casual dinner and a movie on Christmas eve, then go look at the Christmas lights by car after we've eaten. Then buffet breakfast on Christmas morning, followed by my special Christmas hot chocolate and a reading of the Christmas story after that. Then - gifts. Then at about 2.30pm we do a big Christmas lunch! Our guest is a yoga instructor, so at about 5pm, she'll lead us in a restorative yoga class. Then we'll watch another movie in the evening - something Christmas-y again. It's a busy, lovely time for us! :))

Hey we Aussies love to do Christmas in July (seriously it's a thing, they put up decorations in the city and you can go on Christmas in July day Cruises etc - pre Covid) so it will totally work!!!

I have photos of myself and Lil Sis (she's crazy about Christmas) on a Christmas in July outing (pre Covid) and you would never guess it wasn't actually the real Christmas!!!

We didn't even get a Christmas in July in Melbourne. And it would be a stretch to get to some sort of normality by Christmas. My family are in Brisbane and currently they have border restrictions so hopefully by Christmas that gets lifted and we don't have to do the 14 day quarantine. It's been a really tough year for families that are spread out across the country/globe.

@Daisys and Diamonds I shall have my well-used Weber Go Anywhere charcoal BBQ with me.

However, weather is hit and miss in December, so I need to plan to cook inside in case it is miserable.

DK :))

Last Christmas the pork was sauced and all ready for the webber and somehow we had damp charcoal
I had to do it in the oven so it wasn't smokey but it still tasted nice cold

A bottle of meths latter and the webber got going enough to do a chicken

I must say im really looking forward to hearing about your Christmas this year
Do they have wifi out in your woods ? :mrgreen2:

Ww do that in June for the shortest day

I called that off decades ago.

It’s a bit sad for my family.
This Christmas will be my Dads last, he has had progression with his cancer and is looking and feeling weaker. He won’t get to see his his children and grandchildren again.
My sister and family are in France and their visit in April was cancelled due to COVID and the situation won’t have improved enough for them to come for Christmas.
Ditto my brother and partner (in Perth) and his children (Queensland) who won’t be able to visit for Christmas (We have State border crossing restrictions and next to nil internal flights).
so it will just be me, DH and DD with my mum and dad and DH mum.

Oh, Bron, I am sorry to hear that this will be your father’s last Christmas. I’ve been through so many holidays now thinking they would be my father’s last. Somehow he managed to survive various cancers all these years (the “64” in my username denotes his age when first diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer; he will be 80 years old in 10 days) but there is underlying tension every single Christmas (his favorite holiday) that it could be his last. I would almost feel grateful or rather KNOW what year it will happen, my dad’s last. So in a way you have that blessing and so does he, to probably not wonder anymore. I hope that doesn’t seem callous of me to say, I absolutely don’t mean it that way. Hugs to you and yours.

I think we are going to attempt a micro, socially distanced wedding during the holidays... we want to get married before the end of the year. I haven't even thought of Christmas proper, but it's 16 of us immediate family members who usually do dinner together on Christmas day. If we do this right we may be able to do a short travel by car/wedding celebration/nice to see you around Christmas thing. Adding in whomever might be able to safely travel (car/distanced). Outdoor, spaced dinner totally a possibility here at that time.

Thank goodness we're laid back and ready for the worst 2020 can throw at us. Lemons out of lemonade!

@Daisys and Diamonds I shall be online as my line of work requires me to be contactable 24/7 unless I ask my deputy to step in.

I normally volunteer to be on call over the festive period as I don't drink much, don't go anywhere and don't have visitors.

DK :))

Well thats a date then !

Even if it’s just the 2 of us, we’ll still be doing Christmas. We were due to visit DS and future DIL, but ATM there’s still a FCO advisory against flying to the US.

My trip to Canada to visit my mum and bro that I have planned for February 2021 may delayed further - I just don't feel comfortable to travel by air at the moment.

Christmas 2020 will be the same for us. We have a very small immediate family who will probably come stay for 48 hours like they usually do.

nope, never, as long as I have my wits, this year my grand daughter will be 20 months, and I intend to shower her with grannie presents, grannie love and food. :)

No need to cancel for us. My husband and i are both homebodies so we will be celebrating by ourselves and our toddler lol. I'll still be making a tasty couple of meals and we will have a present or two for our daughter. I am sad we cannot see my dad this year but it's for the best. We can video chat or something together christmas morning instead.

I don't know what we're going to do yet, honestly I'm stressing about it a little. We usually do the rounds with DH's maternal large extended family, then we go see his dad and his smaller extended family, then our own.
Most of DH's maternal family doesn't view Covid in the same way we do and aren't particularly meticulous about social distancing/precautions. I really don't want to be around what can amount to 30+ people easy, indoors for many hours. That's just his mom's side. Who mostly won't wear masks. So yeah, I'm thinking no and it's going to cause a sh*tshow dust up because they already think we're overreacting. Guaranteed.
