Buying setting and stone separately online?

Is it typical for buyers to buy settings and stone separately? If so, could I take it to any jewelry store to have them put the stone on the setting? Also, how much would something like this cost?

Companies do not like to set diamonds they did not sell.
I think it is because they make more money selling diamonds than setting them so resent being used to do that work.

Usually the setter will not guarantee the stone for damage during setting if they did not sell it to you.
