Thank you very much. The necklace is supposed to be 18K white gold with a Tahitian cultured pearl and two sapphires (although they look rather raw). The company is offering this with two earrings that include a pearl that is slightly smaller and a similar sapphire with a small white gold strand each. The total amount is 400 US for the necklace and two earrings which is total gems of three Tahitian pearls, four circular raw sapphire beads of sort, the white gold necklace, and two short white gold strands for the earrings. The necklace by itself was originally 190 US. I was told by a jeweler back home that the authenticity of the sapphires would be difficult to ascertain on my own or where that particular pearl and the earring Pearls come from. Lastly, she warned that a gold chain through a drilled pearl hole could cause issues and Black spots. What do you all think? If he is making a custom one based on this necklace, which type of pearl should I go with and what size? What flaws should I look for?

I would appreciate your thoughts. It is in a nice establishment in Doha in the Gold Souq being done. What should I ask to ensure that these are all real? Is 400 USD a good deal when I haggled he and his boss down from maybe 600. Anything similar in the States or elsewhere?

So that it's not fraud, should I specify in the contract the types of Pearls (what would you recommend), the gold, and the sapphires?

I have to make my decision in a day since I am returning from my deployment. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing the responses. Thank you!img_9288_1.jpg

I would walk away. The seller is dishonest. This is not a Tahitian pearl. These are Tahitian pearls. If they are lieing to you about the pearl, they are lieing about the sapphire. The stone could also be a number of other cheaper stones that mimic sapphire or are created.

They come from the black lipped oyster and come in many colors but most are a shade of green. You usually find them in 9mm and up. Although they may be smaller very rarely. As you see they can be off round and sometimes have rings. Does the seller have a caliper you can measure that pearl?

If I was to guess from the price they are giving you they are selling you a white freshwater pearl which is very inexpensive to buy Depending on the size and quality you could get a much better deal her in America by shopping at PearlParadise.com in Los Angeles.
View their items and you will see the cost after you measure their pearl.

As for the chain, A Karat mark is usually on the clasp. It may say 18K or 750 depending on where it was made.

For three freshwater Pearls and the white gold necklace, would that be a good price for 400 USD with the two sapphires on the necklace and the one on each earring? Should I tell him that they should be akoya instead?

It's fairly rare to find akoya over 8 mm and larger ones are expensive. You can see prices for those also at Pearl Paradise as a guide. The loose akoyas at PP will be top grade so you cannot compare apples to apples. Since he was not straight with you with the Tahitian pearls how can you trust him to sell you akoyas. I would walk away from this seller he was not honest. By the way thank you for your service.

Can you find another seller? If you're insistent your buying there ask to see a huge selection of pearls. Look for the most round one in the bunch, (roll it on the counter and see if it rolls straight) with smooth clean skin (no pits or divits) and shiny like a clear coat on your car.
