Hi
A quick question please. What is the difference between a butterfly, tension and friction back for earring posts? Is there a difference? which is tighter -more secure. I have also read about heavy friction backings - again are these more secure. In another post somone mentioned putting an extra notch/groove in the post to help secure the earring backing, would this make a difference???

I need to decide ASAP which backing I want, and the only thing I know for sure is that I dont want the screw backs.

Any photos, feedback on the above and suggestions most welcome

The nicest of all backs are named "La Pousette". They go into the ear just like a plain friction post, but the ear nut, the part that holds the post, locks by internal spring tension onto a groove cut into the post. They are removed by squeezing the ear nut sides and they are very clean.

Heavy weight friction standard backs do a very good job on most earrings. There are certain designs of earring which do better with other styles of backs. Some ear lobes don''t have the thickness or stiffness to hold some earrings facing correctly. Different backs sometimes can fix such individual physical issues.

I''ve had two pair of diamond studs now, with heavy friction backs on each pair. They''ve worked well and I''ve been very pleased.
