Hi all,
Well I made some inroads on getting DH to get on side with an upgrade. We went out for dinner and got a big bottle of wine and I casually slipped in the idea of an upgrade.....

I just said I was looking. A small upgrade could pass; just.
I have a 1.23 RB and have asked my jeweller for a 1.4-149 ct. Apparently these are hard to get and a 1.5 ct will cost about $4000 more. Yikes- that would never fly.
I''ve had my stone for 2 years but only wearing it for 12m due to the pregnancy and my fingers swelling for a good 12m. I feel I should wait; it feels too early and I want to get something that is visibly bigger. My question is; if I wait to get a 1.5 ct in a years time; will it likely cost more? I hate to wait and find its gone up another 1k.
Thanks in advance,
Anika.

I am not an expert, just a consumer, but I feel your pain! If your upgrade policy is unlimited, you can increase gradually. Have you thought about going with a warmer color, to get the size increase? That way, you can have the size and then upgrade again later to up the color, if you want. I did that and was very happy. In the end, after umpteen trades I actually ended up with a different shape altogether, too. I don''t know what you have right now, but some si2''s out there are great values-as long as they are eye clean. Does your jeweler have some in stock to go look at, or do you need to order in what you want?

H Anika. I think you answered you're own question

. Chances are prices will go up but why settle for something you're less than 100% about. Will your jeweler and hubby let you upgrade twice? Bump up to something you can afford now and then use it towards another trade down the road?

I'm in a similar situation but we can't get the ring I want right now. Despite prices going up on both stones and settings

i'm going to wait. Yes, we will probably pay more but I know I'll have no regrets and who knows maybe the US economy will tank and prices will go back down

It seems to me the only way upgrading in small steps works is if the jeweler has a great trade-up policy. Otherwise, you always lose in the deal. Even though prices are rising, you may be better off by waiting, saving, and making one bigger jump.

I really think that going from 1.2 to the 1.4 range is hardly worth it unless that is your final ideal size. I have a 1.44 I am looking at right now and it is really a beautiful size, but I am going from a 1.0, so it is visibly different for me (and I do not want larger than that ever). There are 1.4''s out there, though. But it becomes harder when you are having to go through one jeweler who has limited contacts to get diamonds.

i am not sure about waiting---i used to think wait and do it when you can make the big jump BUT in my case the price of stones has risen so much that i would be hard pressed to get my husband to buy my current stone at todays prices..................is you husbands salary or yours going to be strong despite the economy and constantly rising higher than inflation?

have you considered getting your present ring resized so that you can wear it?

tough call, but honestly $4k to go from a 1.23 to a 1.50 just seems RIDICULOUS.....

is there any way to drop down in color/clarity to pay less? for example last year when i did my 'mini upgrade', i only paid about $700 extra to jump from a 1.29 to my 1.6 but i dropped from H to J and SI1 to SI2 (still totally eye-clean)

i never would have jumped to that for $4k...it just wouldn't have been visually worth it. i would have just saved up until now to get the stone that i could have and made a REAL big jump.

so unless the 1.5 is your final jump, then i say wait it out a little longer til you can make more of a significant jump. i hemmed and hawed over this big jump i just did because it was really expensive BUT there was no other way to get around it, this had to be the big jump in $$ because i had already done the mini-upgrade. so sometimes there is no way to get around paying the big chunk of change, but i think for now you should just wait. that visual difference is not worth an extra $4k IMO.

Yeah.. 4K for that small a jump. No way.

Any chance you''d consider something other than a RB though?
