Hi All!
35.gif

I''m planning on purchasing an asscher (online) this year and I would like to see some in person to get a better handle on the right proportions. I live in the San Francisco bay area, and can travel to San Jose or Walnut Creek area.

Does anyone know of any good jewelers I can visit to see these babies? I wento to CH Jewelers in Valley Fair Mall, which carries asshers in settings by Daniel K and Lazare (Daniel K ''s asschers were much more appealing than the Lazare asschers), which is good, but the saleswoman wasn''t forthcoming with the measurments when I asked for table and depth %. All I was told was the color, weight, and that it was practically square...what???

Are jewelers willing to give out measurments willingly, or do they have to feel that you will buy before they give the goods?

Callista, see what Strm and Kaleigh have to say, they worked to find Kaleigh an amazing Asscher and I am sure they will be able to help you further. Good luck!

If they did give you the stats and you tried to match those online... chances are you will be surprised (pleasantly or not) by the results - because table & depth doesn't tell much about the looks of these step cuts.

You could try THIS and match what you see and like online.

IMO, as usual...

About the stats: leaving all considerations of brilliance aside (to avoid writing a whole book about things I can't claim to know much about), table size makes a large difference in what these stones look like. And this has little to do with light return etc. It just makes a different look. You would probably not find slight variations tremendously visible (say, 5% shows a bit, 2%? not really). But the 'large table' versus the 'small table' looks are different species and you surely can decide which type fits your taste better on the ground than online. Which works better also depends on the size of the stones, IMO. Just something to look out for, if you wish.

These two make pretty good examples - same lighting, both with great brilliance as much as I managed (not typical of what I get to see in person - just trying to level the field). I could also find pictures of real stones...

These refused to get attached to the previous post.

I am not much of a fan of the large table kind. If I tried to explain why... I should also admit I have seen allot of well cut squares with large tables - most of the 'bad' examples are not too brilliant and when they are, the tiny crown steps don't manage to break up the flash from the large pavilion facets => lack of glitter or scintillation as is called. Under half a carat this is not a bad thing because those facets are small anyway, towards 3 cts.... different quite the opposite.

However, some stones with extra rows of facets on the pavilion look pretty good with large tables. (see example in next post). These stones are described as 'cut cornerd step cut' on the lab reports - by GIA at least, not 'square emerald cut'. Same description as is done for the RA, and for the same reason (extra facets compared to the traditional emerald cut). You might want to look up such stones - perhaps a local shop may have some.

my favorite asscher vendor is www.goodoldgold.com
They have both kicken generic asschers as well as the royal asschers.
When it comes to asschers a lot of the time you have to have the vendor call them in.

WF has called in some nice ones also.

Some threads to get you atarted:

AGS is sposed to be coming out with there cut grade this year also.
When they do infinity is going to start cutting them and that should be very very interesting giving his track record for precision cutting.

A search for asscher here will show you a lot of pictures of what other people have bought.
