broken stone - what could''ve happened?

Hello all,

About 9 months ago, with the help of many on this board, I bought a 1.15 ACA in a Tiffany Knife Edge from Whiteflash. My fiancee could not have been happier with the ring and I could not have been happier with my experience with WF.

A few days ago, my fiancee came to me and said, "There''s something wrong with my ring." I looked and from the top there appeared to be a sort of cloud in the diamond. Viewed from the side, I could see what appeared to be a good-sized chip in the stone. We took it to a local jeweler (just for inspection - I wasn''t going to have them do anything to it) and when he looked at it under the loupe, he said there was a chunk taken out of the stone.

When viewed from the top, there really is no fire or scintillation from that particular area, which makes up around 1/6th of the spread of the stone.

My fiancee repeatedly assured me that does not remember hitting the ring at all, and I believe her, as I have seen her take incredible care of it and remove it when there''s even the least chance it could get damaged.

Has anyone had a similar experience to this, or can anyone give me any idea how this may have happened?

I can''t help but get the slightest pang of anger whenever I see others'' engagement rings, especially when I think about how much time I spent on this board and talking to various PS vendors before purchasing ours.

I''m sorry this happened. Even though your GF is probably VERY careful with her ring, if you hit a diamond in the right spot it can and will chip. Maybe she dropped her ring on the counter or into the ultrasonic cleaner too hard or something without realizing it, or banged it without noticing.

One suggestion I have is to look at the certificate for the stone and see if it shows a feather in the spot where it''s now chipped. It could be that it was a weak area to begin with.

It really doesn''t matter what happened to the stone though; what matters is you need to look into getting another stone. Did you have insurance on the diamond? I sure hope so as they can help you to replace the stone or write you a check.

I can''t imagine how horrible this must be for you! I will keep my fingers crossed that it all works out!

researcher is right, there are ways to knock a ring or stone and not even have it be that hard...and if it''s hit just right it can take a chunk out. there are also many things we do with our hands that we don''t even remember doing.

do you have insurance on the stone? if so, get a claim filed right away. if not, well not sure what to say...you can get the diamond recut and you will lose a good amount of the carat weight, or get an entirely new stone and have this one put into a bezel pendant or something.

Gosh I''m sorry to hear this. But Mara and Researcher are correct. You can hit a diamond in the right spot and loose a portion of your diamond. I really hope it''s insured. If it is, call your insurance rep tomorrow and file a claim. Many times, we knock our diamonds around without realizing it. It happens , and that''s what insurance is for. You and your fiance have been incredibly unlucky, unfortunately this can happen

It doesn''t always take much to knock a chunk out of a diamond - contrary to popular belief, hit it the right way in the wrong place and boom. Contact your insurance ASAP and I know this will be sorted out for you. I know it isn''t the same as the diamond you took such care to pick out, but I am sure you will find another just as beautiful.

While it must be a sickening feeling to realize what happened, you are not the first on this board to have this happen. I am sorry that it happened to your fiance. It really is an accident when something like this happens so I hope she won''t be too hard on herself.

Oh no, you''ve had the nightmare experience. I''m so sorry. There are so many situations in everyday life that can expose a diamond to danger. I remember chatting to a friend years ago (whilst wearing a diamond ring, but not my current one) and my hands were physically describing an object and I hit my hand against a nearby brick wall. I was seriously lucky not to damage the diamond. It''s a good example of how a normal situation can turn into a dangerous situation for a diamond. It sounds as though your girlfriend was very unlucky. I''m keeping my fingers crossed that you insured the ring. I think my husband insured mine because I don''t think he trusts me!

Hopefully you''ll tell us yours was insured and can be replaced.

Just curious, what was the clarity of your diamond?
Can you post a pic of the plot from your AGS certificate?

I do hope you had insurance on the stone...this sort of thing is exactly what it is for. Sometimes a good thwack of the ring is easily remembered, but I did have one experience where I had bent 2 platinum prongs on a 6 prong ring with no idea how it happened.
