A friend of mines wife has a princess cut and my fiance has an H & A round? He was saying that round sparkles more beacuse the light reflects out where the princess reflects light in. What does that mean and is he correct? The H & A blows the average princess cut away as far as sparkle goes.

a round brilliant does sparkle more but a princess can sparkle a lot too. I guess it depends on what kind of RB you have and what kind of Princess. All depends on the cut.

Typically rounds do sparkle more...but an ACA and other princess cuts will provide plenty sparkle...

Ideal proportions for a round are an exact science. On the other hand, the numbers seem to be a bit looser for princesses. That''s why we have the HCA for rounds but not princesses. Ideal cut grading for princesses (e.g. AGS0 princess) is a relatively new development. So, while a well-cut round and a well-cut princess will both sparkle a lot, there are a heck of a lot more well-cut rounds than princesses out there. I think it will catch up in time, but right now, cutting rounds is a more exact science than cutting princesses.

What the flying pigs does reflects light in mean? The light must exit the stone.

Princesses have more leakage (the light exits through the back) and gathers more low angle light.

I have never heard the terms "reflects light in" and "reflects light out". Because of the shape and cutting style, princess stones have a different kind of sparkle (small pinfire) versus round brilliants (medium sized sparkle). PC also has more light leakage compared to the RB, hence RBs will outsparkle PCs.
