Hi,
I just wanted to know in detail how to determine the fire/brightness of an opal on a scale 1 to 5. Level five is generally described as: brilliant, full of fire, color jumps out of the stone at you at arms length etc. But I do not know how to determine these levels. If I buy an opal with the fire being level 5, how do I know that it is truly level 5? Is there any instrument to judge it or does it all depend on an opal dealer''s experience? Moreover, is level 5 fire opal very expensive? Somebody told me level 5 is too rare and one was sold once for $65000 2ct weight.
Secondly, some jewellers cover the back of opal when they set it in a ring. Is there anything to hide by doing this?
I would really appreciate indepth ideas on these issues please.
Thanks
