A girl REALLY wants to show off her new ring to family and closest friends (and share the excitement of being officially engaged, of course!), so I really think it would be good to do the proposal before you visit her family on Christmas Eve..or maybe while you're there!

That it is, though I think I threw up in my mouth a little because I despise those pretentious Lexus commercials (which are now borderline narcissistic with their assumption that everybody knows their little jingle and if you hear it, well you know what that means!). Anyway, I had the supreme luck of her suggesting, literally one day after I bought the ring, that we take a trip to NYC before Christmas and see the Rockefeller Tree and maybe take a carriage ride around Central Park and the Rockefeller area. My work is cut out for me. It's going to be December 18 and it's been a long wait for me having to keep that ring a secret for a month. Just yesterday she tells me she was at a holiday party at work and her old collegues from other departments were inspecting her hand saying "where's that ring?" Also to top it off there was a major character proposal on Hawaii 5-0 so this holiday season is laying it on pretty thick. I'm actually glad I have the ring because if I didn't I'd feel pretty bad about myslef, lol. Good luck with your Christmas morning plans! We'll all be checking in to see how you made out (and don't forget pics!).

Thanks ame! We're having dinner first and a carriage ride at 9PM. It starts in Central Park and eventually goes by the tree, so I can pop the question whenever the mood feels right. I want to do it during the ride since I heard it's very crowded around the tree making it difficult to have an intimate conversation or even get down on a knee. We'll also have a blanket for the ride so it'll be warmer. As for careful, it'll be insured before it leaves the house.

Yes, they are going to make one for me that is as close to the Helzerg setting as possible. She absolutely loves that ring, so I really want to get close to it, without it being overpriced and with a higher quality diamond. It's only going to cost a few hundred more than the original one. Hope it works out!!!

I'm sure it will, the stories I've read here of GOG have demonstrated they're great at what they do

Keep in mind that although she loved the Helzberg setting, so long as it's close, she will LOVE it! You got a lot better diamond for your money, which means not only did you pay attention to what she likes, you were smart about how you spent the funds

From experience...ask the carriage driver before you go if you can stop at a really good spot for a picture of the skyline together - slip him a $20 bill while you ask, for good measure She'll think it's just for a nice picture of you together.

This sets you up for two things:

1) You're out of the carriage, good to go to drop to one knee!
2) The carriage driver has your camera in hand - ready to take pictures of the big moment! When you give him your camera, explain how to work the camera, and say quietly "take as many pictures as you want."
3) Congratulations, and Central Park is a beautiful place for a proposal

Nothing really to report. 6 month zero percent financing was approved and they are designing the setting based on the Helzberg ring. They said it shouldn't be a problem getting it before Christmas. My future bride has no idea

The only reason why I am kind of leaning against the box within a box idea is because she will probably figure it out minutes before I actually get to ask her to marry me. Thinking it might ruin the impact of getting down on one knee and taking it out as the "tell". She would know the proposal is coming before I get to ask her, you know? Or at least have an idea that it might be coming.

If I did go this route I was going to put the empty box in there and keep the ring in my pocket But i'm not sure if I want to do the box within a box.

Maybe I can have her daughter hand her the empty box and when she opens it get down on one knee with the real ring?

I'd listen to your gut on this one. You're right about the box-in-a-box giving it away in short order. You could do something nice and sweet and simple like "Ok kids, there's one last present Mommy forgot to open!" and whip it out, with or without wrapping paper. Keep it sweet & simple, she'll love it!

Ok, spoke to GOG today, the ring is done and they will be getting it this morning. Word is that it came out awesome!!! Marie is going to take pics of it and email it to me today and I can have the ring tomorrow

Can't believe the big day is almost here. We are dropping off the kids with the other parents at noon and we have the rest of Christmas day to spend together. Probably swing by my parents house to tell them at some point. I booked a hotel room in NYC and we are going to have dinner and drinks to celebrate. All a surprise to her, lol
