So after all of the help from Pricescope, I decided to go with a 1.6 carat GIA G SI1 excellent cut diamond from Mark at engagement ring direct.

certification here: http://www.jamesallen.com/GIA-Diamond-Certificate/1294324/G-SI1-Ideal-Cut-1.6-Carat-Round-Diamond.JPG

engagementringdirect will give an appraisal, which seems like a very trusted pricescope vendor - but do you recommend getting a separate appraisal by an independent appraiser too? If so, do I go before or after the stone is put in the setting?

Thanks for any feedback.

Appraised as loose unless you do not trust what is represented by the vendor. Else, finish product appraisal is good enough, to confirm the stone is the same as the grading report, the stone is mounted properly and for a replacement value for your insurance.

thanks for the quick response. but i''m a little confused.

It first sounded like I should get it appraised as a loose stone, but then it sounds like their are more benefits to getting it appraised after it is mounted. Please explain why I should do get it appraised as a loose stone then.

Thanks.

Also, so you do think I should get it appraised by an independent appraiser?

If you get your stone appraised loose the appraiser can tell you about the stone itself - that it matches the cert, his professional opinion on colour and clarity, any durability issues it may have, etc.

If you get your finished ring appraised the appraiser can tell you about the ring itself - that the stones are set well, that the ring is well made, what a more realistic replacement value is for insurance (the appraisal you get from ERD will likely be very inflated). However because the stone is set the appraiser will not be able to give you an in-depth analysis of the stone.

Yes, I think it's worth having the ring appraised - if only so you don't pay unnecessary insurance premiums.

so it sounds like it is better to get the loose stone appraised with the ring. but will the insurance use that appraisal for the loose stone? or should i still use the free appraisal from where i am buying from?

So glad you are asking this!! My questions exactly =)

I had my loose stone appraised, checked that it matched the cert, discussed the color and my appraiser gave me a value of my diamond. After I had the diamond set into a setting, I returned to have a another appraisal of the ring for insurance. The second appraisal was very short and was free since that part of the appraisal was already paid for in the first meeting. Your appraiser may also do it this way too.

Get the loose stone appraised only if you have questions about the diamond''s integrity (e.g., clouds affecting brilliance, feathers that might be durability issues) or you have questions about the stone''s true color or clarity (e.g., an ebay buy, a vendor you don''t trust, an EGL cert), and in that case have it done by a qualified independent appraiser. I would personally only trust a few of the recommended PS vendors for this.

Have it appraised set for insurance purposes. This will give you a more accurate value than the one given by the vendor, most likely. The appraiser can tell you if the diamond matches the cert (based on inclusions etc) as well.

When I personally buy diamonds from a trusted vendor, and I would inlcude ERD in that equation, then I only have them appraised after they are set.

Yes, this is very common too.

Being in NYC I have a few options for Pricescope appraiser. Any recommendations?
