Hello,

I recently purchased a 1.37 cts/ VVS1/G that came with an EGL international report from a local jeweler. I had it checked out and found out that there was an IGI mumbai laser inscription on the diamond. I looked up the diamond and it showed 1.37 cts/ VVS2/ J. The thing that worries me is that the color grade is so different. I also heard that GIA has a stricter grading policy, if graded but GIA, would the color be even lower?
Also since it was graded IGI first, shouldn't the EGL report note or comment in the report that it has an IGI mumbai laser inscribed number on it? Could the jeweler have found a similar diamond report with similar measurements but better color?

Why not send it in to GIA and get a real report or even better AGs and get a real report with a real cut grade. You may be pleasantly surprised, but probably not.

One of these two reports is at least wrong on two of three between the color, the clarity and the fluorescence (and possibly on all three). What is really sad is that they might well both be wrong on at least two of the three grades.

My guess is that both are too high on the clarity and probably the color as well, but it could be an interesting real life example instead of our constant reminder that "usually" there is a reason that the diamond does not have a real report that would allow the vendor to buy it and sell it for what it is really worth. It is not uncommon to see a diamond shopped around. On a carat stone, one color or clarity grade can makes hundreds or even thousands of dollars difference in the price. Even with make believe papers that are already heavily discounted by the trade there will be a substantial difference between the price of these two stones.

For example, at full rap, ignoring the discount built in for trading in these two papers

The price of a 1.37ct G-VVS1 is $16,303.00

The price of a 1.37ct J-VVS2 is $9,316.00

If you were a "paper monger" willing to use the best paper to your advantage and the ultimate client's disadvantage, which paper woud you burn and which paper would you keep?

Wink

P.S. My apologies if this seems harsh. This type of perfidious action makes me cranky.
