Hi Everyone,
Thanks to the helpful knowledge from Ebree, devientdrow, portoar, and Hest88 I was able to find a stone that I liked a lot.

Specs:
0.83 Carats
H Color
Ideal (H&A) Cut
VS1 Clarity
Ideal symmetry & polish
Good idealscope reading
Excellent Holloway cut adviser reading

Paid: ~3400
Appraised: ~4200

Seller: Wink Jones (www.Winfields.com) - Nice people, very friendly and willing to help!

I''d like to post a pic or two (of the stone), but the PS forum software won''t let me. Oh, well.

I''m now thinking about the ring and setting. I''d like something in white gold that tapers (narrows) to a 6 tiny prong setting. Her ring size is a 5.5 and because the stone isn''t quite that large, I''d like the band to be somwhat narrow. Does anyone know a jeweler (gold smith) either on the web or in San Diego that can help with this?

Questions:
White gold vs platinum? Preferences from the ladies? I asked a few ladies and they prefered white gold because it can always be dipped and made to look like new. I understand that platinum is more precious, but I''ve looked at platinum rings on people and after a while they look dull (no offence to anyone who has platinum rings).

Wide or narrow band? The stone that I have is roughly 6 mm (diameter) x 6 mm (deep). I think that a wide band would make the stone look way too small. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Hmmph

Yes, get a narrow band. Wide band don'' t always flatter everyone''s hands. I have white gold, but my choice was a financial issue. We had X amount of money and I wanted the most we could afford on the center diamond and shared prong setting I wanted.

Have you asked your GF what she likes?

Simple is always classic and elegant.

This is sort of a coincidence, but I got a diamond today from Wink''s that is also H VS1 but a different size diamond! So I am thinking about the setting issue, too.

I am against the idea of having to plate the setting of any fine jewelry. So my two choices are either 18k white gold with palladium alloy or platinum. And Mark Morrell, who has the most beautiful platinum settings I have seen, uses 90% platinum and 10% iridium for his rings (harder and scratches less than 95% plat). So my setting needs to be one of those two choices.

I think you could certainly find a ready made setting that matches your description. Look at Stuller for example. They probably have a million! And yes, you should have a thin band with a stone that size. It would look wonderful with a thin diamond wedding band! (It seems like I have read on here that Stuller has a new white gold called X1, or something like that, which stays white without polishing, too).
