If anyone can offer any advice I''d appreciate it.

I like the tiffany 6 prong platinum solitaire setting better than the blue nile one based on the pictures i see on the internet. The blue nile looks set higher(?)

I am in the market for a .75 - .85 carat signature ideal cut round, d color, vvs1/2 clarity...

I''m wondering if its a good idea to buy the diamond from BN, and have it set in the tiffany setting? If i bring it to a good jeweler, would I have to worry about it being set right?

I havent been to tiffany yet, but i''m sure a diamond with the same specs from there would be significantly more money..

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Tiffany doesn''t sell their settings. Check out superbcert, or WF. They both have nice Tiffany style settings. Also D color and a VVS clarity is over doing it IMHO. Is there a reason why you want a D, VVS?

Hey thanks for the reply.

i didnt know tiffany wouldnt just sell their setting, that stinks.. I''ll check out those sites for other setting options. is it a safe/smart idea to get a setting & diamond separate and have someone put it together for me?

as far as the signature ideal, D color & VVS1 i just figured its a one time purchase, might as well get the best for that size. originally was looking at 1-1.25 carat signature ideal D-F VS2 but it would just be too big on her small fingers. So since its so much cheaper i figured i''d get a near flawless in the .75 range. Never bought a diamond before, just want to get something amazing. Is it really over doing it? I dont know much about diamonds, but have been researching a lot online

I budgeted 10k. I want it to look proportional to her finger size, not gaudy. Just a stunning classic round solitaire.

Any help is much appreciated.. stumbled upon this great site. planning to purchase within 6 months

You are paying a high premium for a D color, same goes for the VVS clarity. You won''t be able to tell the difference between a D and an F, and most likely a G. With calrity as long as it''s eye clean, you''re fine with a VS, or SI1. If you want mind clean go with a VS2.
Also is an upgrade policy important to you. www.whiteflash.com and www.goodoldgold.com would be vendors I''d look into, have bought from both and they offer upgrade policies. Looks like you know that CUT is key, so now it''s figuring out what color, and clairty you are comfortable with. With clairty, why pay for what you don''t see???
Best of luck, and welcome to PS!!!

How small are her fingers? Do you know her finger size?

Hello,

I am a very new poster, but I have just been posting kind of complaining about the fact that my fiance bought me (at Tiffany) an F, VVS1 stone. While I can appreciate it for its excellent color/clarity grades, at the same time I wish he had gone for a larger stone with something like a VS2 clarity - because as was pointed out, you can''t tell the difference by looking at it. However, I do have small finger size (4.75) so these lovely people have tried to reassure me that my 0.57 ct doesnt look too small.

All that said, the higher color/clarity stone is more valuable, even if you cant tell that by looking at it. I suppose if you are sure that the ~0.75 ct size would look good on her finger, and you have the money to spend, why not get the better quality stone? It really depends on if you are really set on that size and how much you want to spend. If she really loves Tiffanys, it might be worth it to go there - I think you could come close to that size for $10k. However, if not, you will definitely get "more bang for your buck" elsewhere. One thing I have seen (though I havent seen anyone else post about it) is getting settings done in palladium instead of platinum. Tiffany doesnt do this, but other stores (such as Bailey, Banks and Biddle) do. Palladium is very similar to platinum except it is significantly less expensive because it isnt as rare. It will not turn yellow like white gold will - and it will let you spend more on the diamond than on the setting.

Do you have any idea if she would prefer quality over quantity? I have often wished my fiance had tried to sneakily find out what I would want somehow.

I am by no means a diamond-expert like many of these posters, but I am a recently engaged girl! The one other thing I wanted to suggest to you is that, no matter what you end up getting, soon after she says "yes" you can give her the option to change her ring if she doesnt like it. You can tell her either, "I could have had a larger stone for a bit lesser quality" or "I could have gotten you a near-flawless stone, but it would be smaller" and let her choose what she prefers. (if you are okay with that!) If you get it from Tiffanys make sure this happens within the 30-day return period! I didnt even know what my stone really was or that there were options until after that had passed and it was too late to do anything about it if I had wanted to. Just opinions from my own situation!

I would go to Tiffanys. There solitaire setting is really pretty..and the online pics just dont do it justice :-) When you go and talk to the SA, tell them your budget and what you''re looking to do. They can pull up their database and show you everything they have, which will show u size/clarity/color and you can decide from there what size or color and clarity you want. THey are DEFINTELY in your price range. My BF just bought me a ring from there, and I can tell u from the rings I looked at you can def get a very nice quality stone for that price :-) goodluck!

first of all, it is so exciting that you are gonna propose soon! (congratulations!!)
2nd of all, um .... after talknig to other people (mostly girls) and observe how they react when looking at other people''s rings and the postings here, I would say that you might want to consider a bigger carat size and a bit lower on the other ratings (although I do not know a lot about diamonds, but it seems to be it won''t be a big "sacrifice" in terms of quality to go down from D, VVS2).

Do your girlfriend know a lot about diamonds or have a preference for a particular brand? I say that because most girls who do not know much about diamonds (myself included!) probably only care about the cut of the diamond (round v.s. square, etc), thick or thin band, with our without diamonds on the band, AND the size of the diamonds (yes we are all jaded, if not before, we are now as soon as we found this site!!) And if she is fixated on one brand, then sometimes a smaller diamond from that brand means more than a bigger diamond from elsewhere, and there isn''t anything wrong with that either!

I am sure your gf will be happy with whatever you surprised her with, but to minimize her wanting to change the ring (which even if you honestly have no problems with, the girl sometimes feel guilty about doing so), I would say spend the $ for a bigger carat size and still get a really nice quality stone. a win-win!!

Last but not least, a salute to you for putting so much time and effort to get your girlfriend the perfect engagement ring, especially doing all this in order to surprise her!

Thanks so much everyone for all the feedback, this is a great forum. So happy that I found it. Such positive enthusiasm here :)

She said her ring size is a 5.5, but i will steal a ring of hers and double check on that. she has long thin fingers

She too really likes a round solitaire. She knows little about diamonds, i''m sure I know much more after spending time here and researching diamond online. Like you stated mb418 all she knows is cut,size,setting/sidestones etc.. She isnt fixated on any brand although I dont know a girl who wouldnt be proud to say its a Tiffany! And the name Tiffany actually has significance to us so it may just work out that way :)

From all the pictures i''ve seen on this site, the dimensions on a .75-.85 carat seem to look very proportional for a smaller, longer finger. Whatever size looks perfect on her i''d want. I spent a lot of time looking at pictures on a thread here of diamonds under 1 carat. It seemed the proportion that looked closest to her hand looked really good around .8 carat. If it doesnt look just right to me, unless she was completely in love with it, i''d exchange and upgrade it myself.

I definitely plan on stopping in Tiffanys just to see the setting in person, and go from there. Are they able to get a diamond to the exact specs I request? Is their best cut comparable to the Blue Nile signature collection?

I dont mind paying a premium just to say its a near flawless, completely colorless diamond. Even if you cant see the difference its just the type of person I am. Especially for a one time purchase like this. Whats $5k more over the course of a lifetime.

Just out of curiosity, would Tiffanys have a few in the range of .75-1 in the setting I want iin stock so that I could have her try some on just to see what looks perfect?

Ultimately I''ll probably surprise her and get it on my own, but I wouldnt be opposed to taking her to let her help pick it out. I doubt she would be either. For us this is something thats been a long time coming...

Thanks so much for taking interest in helping make my dreams come true :)

You''ve got some good advice here and if it''s Tiffany''s you want (and she wants) then go for it. I would, however, throw a word of caution out about proportion and finger size -- 5.5 is certainly small, but not tiny (do a search and you''ll find alot of sizes in that range here!) and I would encourage you to find out what other women in her circle or family have in terms of carats and see if she likes those sizes or smaller/larger. Though there are plenty of women who don''t care about size I think you''ll find a huge contingent here and IRL who are all about size.

Just my two cents and congrats and your future engagement!

Hey if you go to your tiffanys.. so can pull up any ring in their database and have it sent to their store for you to look at. thats what my FF did... My size is 4.5 and a .55 looked perfect on my finger, but we also plan on upgrading later though.. But you can always do the same thing later on if she decides she would like a larger diamond from tiffanys...goodluck!

The Superbcert is an amazing ring. I bought the diamond elsewhere and shipped it to them to be set without any problems.
