Hello, in certain light conditions i see blue flashes on my fiancee''s engagement ring. Mostly on cloudy days or indoors on certain lighting. Am i seeing fluorescence or something wrong with my diamond? I took it into the store and double checked under the black light that it wasn''t fluorescence. no hints of blue. What causes the blue flashes or is that normal for brilliance/fire?

GIA Certified 1.8, VS2, G, Excellent Cut, no fluorescence

Also, i have the actual GIA Certificate, how do you really know they just don''t make a professional copy of it and find a diamond with similar characteristics? I have identified the inclusions under a loupe.

thanks guys!

FIRE Check out the Fire Thread, my diamond does this too...just like a prism refracting the light.

Blue is the most common dispersion, then yelowwy orange

The best, and seemingly only, way to do this for the common person is to take the stone and grading report to an independent appraiser. That''s what I did and what most people on this board will tell you to do. Should cost between $100 and $300 (New York City prices) depending on whether you want all the extra fancy reports. The basic (read: lower) priced appraisals pretty much verify that the diamond is what the grading report says it is so that you are sure you''re getting what you pay for. Hope that helps. And if you need to find a local appraiser use the link at the top of the PriceScope page to find a recommended one.

A diamond is like a prism, it will break up white light into a rainbow of colours, with blue being the most common. Relax, this is a common phenomenon.

I realize that it''s the most common color for a diamond to give off however I saw a diamond the other day that was giving off blue like I had never seen before! Really, unlike anything I had ever seen!

My childrens'' hairdresser got engaged recently and I couldn''t help but stare at her diamond (as she''s doing their hair one by one!) because of the shades of blue coming off of it. I didn''t want to ask her the stats of the stone, but you could tell it was cut very well for a princess and even though it was dirty (from her working) it was a very good clarity too. I really was mesmerized by her stone, it was so beautiful, like a rare light show! I then tried to stop staring so she wouldn''t think I was some obsessed diamond fanatic (the real me!) but she was thrilled I loved the stone so much!

Mike Rock, if your stone is anything like the one I saw it must be beautiful! Post a pic!!!
