It's 1p.m. here and telemedicine consultations with real doctors in France are dirt cheap (25€!!!!!!) . It's covered 100% if insured hwre in Europe, but 25€ if no insurance.

I use the App "Qare". It's super helpful to talk to a doctor and I've had all sorts of specialists on FaceTime within under an hour.

This could at least help to evaluate who to see next and in which timeframe.

No French, sadly.
But I am at the ER now hoping to get that test done ASAP. Couldn't sleep and thought hell with it, I'm heading in.

Well that was awful. As I have seen a doctor and have a lab req, the triage nurse ripped me a new one for not "using appropriate use of the ER dept". I explained about the labs being booked up and holiday Wednesday and apologized as I'm unfamiliar with ER. Friends advised I try there. Omfg, what a nasty experience. I walked away. Not about not getting the labs but at her yapping at me that each ER visit costs $850 dollars, did I know? Yeah, been paying my whole life and never used it once, and was unsure of whether to go. Called 811 and all covid related, so I gave it a go. Put that in the books as another a nasty and shaming hospital experience.

In the meantime, you can get a home UTI test at the drugstore, if that helps. Well, you can in the US anyway.

What a horrible experience. I am so sorry you had to deal with that. Shame on them, not you. If you can get your hands on uricalm / phenazopyridine or similar it will help you to at least aleviate the pain in the next few days. Not sold in Europe, I buy it in bulk when I am in the US. Worth it's weight in gold... well, not these current crazy prices. Maybe the year 2000 prices...

Ugh I’m sorry. @Begonia hopefully it’s nothing serious. There was no reason for the triage nurse to be so rude. I imagine they’re super stressed at the moment due to the rise in Covid 19 infections so don’t take it personally. (((Hugs))).

Take the home UTI test. Fingers crossed it’s “only” that.

Yeah, nearing end of shift and stressed. I stayed calm and explained how I was uncertain if they could help me as I've never used the ER. Nope, the shame just kept coming. Nurses and doctors used to have near hero status with me but not tonight they don't. There was no need for the shaming, she can just advise that she can't help and why. My work friend told me she goes all the time when she can't get help. I guess you withhold as much info as possible and play a better game than my honest approach. I'm fine with no treatment but I'm #@$&ing tired and didn't need the abuse. Oh, did I know that each visit costs $850 to the taxpayers? Nope, paid for it my whole life and never used it, but I'm hoping the abuse was free?

OMG how horrible.

When you're in pain and worried you're in pain and worried!!

Next time it's something dangerous and they ask you why you didn't go *immediately* .

That said I got asked why I came in with my kiddo just before our first covid lockdown.

My 5y/o kid got hit by the rear mirror of a car that was driving too close to the sidewalk (she was standing on the sidewalk, preparing to look "left right left" On the hand of our babysitter and the lady abruptly pulled to the side - suv with heavy big rear mirror that sticks out a lot).

The kid went rolling over the pavement for several meters and couldn't walk. While I scooped her up, someone called an ambulance immediately.

Upon arrival they couldn't find anything but bruises TG . Nurse seriously asked if it was necessary to come!!!!!!!!

In was like W the actual EFF??

Just to say: it's not you. They're stressed and scared.
Doesn't make it better, but more understandable that it's not you!!

Some doctors offices are able to run a quick urinalysis in office. Can you call your doctor's office when they open. That may be an option that way you can get started on antibiotics while they wait for the final culture result. Hope you get better soon

Off to a lab to see if I can get a walk in. Hoping to get this simple test, get some antibiotics and move on. Navigating the health care where I live has changed, and that's ok. Just wish the workers weren't so damn nasty about trying to navigate a fluid, ever-changing system. I did my homework as best I could and made no assumptions.

Ok, I'll take that with me, it's not me. I was honest and forthcoming and went to see if they could help. No sauntering in.
Whatever. Throwing hands in air.
I take #$@% and abuse all day in my seaport, you'd think I'd be used to it by now.

Nope, not anymore they don't. Vetted on phone and all samples done at a lab. At least in my regional district.

Thank you tho. I expect this will pass, most likely scenario is UTI?

Yes, its most likely a UTI.
They can treat empirically (best guess antibiotics) then test if symptoms don't resolve
Or treat and still send you to any major lab to drop off a sample, either way no reason not to prescribe antibiotics today.

what a cow that nurse was
im.so sorry
here in Wanganui being as semi rural we have a shortage of GPs and if its anything other than a secduled appointment for ongoing managements of a condition you either wait 2 weeks for an apoinment or you go to ED where a nurse asses if you need to see an on site GP (staffed from a pool of the local GPs) that is charged or if its an accident or something more serouse to be sent through to A&E
It actually works really well onve we got our head around it - in Wellington its a big no no going to A&E with a cold or such like but i think blood in urine would be absolutly fine but you'd probably have to wait a bit in a big hospital to be seen

That nurse was just horrible
Definatly go through the appropriate channels and complain

You would think so? That’s how it was formerly done but the stand in for my retiring doc isn’t writing any prescription until she sees some lab results? Maybe her standard of care is more stringent or is this too a result of changes due to COVID perhaps?

I respectfully disagree with her standard of care.. UTI is more of a clinical diagnosis than a lab diagnosis. Is going to an urgent care an option? With hot/cold flashes ie fever.

Thanks girl. I’m just tired after working the shifts and the blood threw me for a loop. Quite a lot of it, more than my usual UTI amount, much more. Trying to remember just bc there is more doesn’t mean it’s not a simple fix. My UT is tired too I expect.

I would complain, but fear I’d just hit a closed rank with more abuse directed at me. I can’t take anymore, I get it All. Day. Long.
I will say this, when approached with honesty and naïveté, no ER experience should be a shaming one.

See above. Went to ER and got a free helping of abuse and no care. Don’t use the ER here unless critical ABC problem or can’t breathe due to COVID. They gotta update the website as it did say help available when local sources cannot help you. Thanks for your advise tho, not trying to be argumentative but if I am, I apologize. I’m dogass tired.

Urinating blood can be a sign of a kidney infection. That can be an emergency. I have no idea why this woman yelled at you.

I hope everything works out ok at the lab and that you are able to get speedy treatment!

Not Emergency room, but a walk in clinic. There is no reason for the abuse you received, you were already there they could have helped. Sorry you are going through this.

This is how my doc does it (bolded above). She would call something else in if the labs come back different than expected or the antibiotics didnt
clear it up. I always get meds before my labs on UTI like issues (but I'm in the U.S.) Also, some of our over-the-counter UTI meds
to reduce pain/and or drinking a ton of water can cause the labs to come back negative (or not grow anything as they say). So, labs
dont always help from what I understand.

EDIT...hope you get some meds and feel better soon @Begonia

Walk in clinics you need to be vetted by a doc on the phone. None were answering (they only answer for an hour or so in the am until they reach capacity) so finally got thru to family doc (new to me) who is sending me to the lab. I've been told samples are only being done at labs now :(

Oh @Begonia I'm so sorry. I can tell you my story but it was years pre-Covid. I had the same symptoms as you. I got labs, showed nothing. I got scheduled with both a urologist and gyno for tests. Showed nothing. Urologist said to be safe, he'd do a bladder biopsy. They sedate you and flush your bladder with warm water while a camera is inserted. Mine showed nothing. So far, it has been a one time event, but it was scary.

Here's your bonus laugh. I had the sedation, and changed into hospital gown. I returned to my daughter who was waiting in the surgical waiting room with me because I was a fall risk with the sedation. After a few minutes there, I turned to her and loudly asked, "Do I have to take off my underwear for this?!" Well, everyone turned to look, I was unabashed. Daughter quietly said yes. Right, makes sense. After the procedure I was still zonked. I was sitting in with nurse and she was asking me all these questions. I just said "Okay!" and that was it. They finally let me go.
