Blemishes - Naturals

I have a question on natural blemishes. I have had two opposing viewpoints on naturals (I am looking at VS2 stones).

1. Naturals are fine and will not hurt the value of the stone. In fact, I was told Natural''s were better than an inclusion since it is not in the stone.

2. Naturals take away from the value of the stone and the stone will be discounted. The light will not reflect well off of that portion of the stone that is not polished, so it will effect the briliance/fire.

Please let me know which one is correct? or if both have some validity? I''m not an expert, but I would think that if once facet or some piece is not of the diamond is not polished, I would think it must have some effect on the light performance?

both might have some merit. it would probably depend on where the natural is located. if it is on the girdle or below, i don''t think it would effect performance or be anything to worry about.

Almost every natural I have seen is under the girdle, or part of it. It might result in a very small say 1% reduction, or none at all. Very often they are not mentioned, even though they are there (?missed?).

You can not almost ever see a natural thru the top of the stone because the light is refratcted away from it by the crown facets, unless you look hard from a weird angle with magnification - in which case it is an identification birth mark.

Traditionally a cutter who left 4 small naturals just under the girdle from an octahedral piece of rough was a mark of supreme craftsmanship.

And yes - anything outside is much less important than anything inside - hence Internallay Flawless

True..., and they still are..., except these days these four+/- small naturals need to be covered by the halves in the final brillianteering stage!

And make sure its still a great cut...

A sign of rough optimum usage...

No wonder many cutters need psychological sessions every once in a while...
