Black widow in my yard (photo)

The thing is, I just CAN'T not open a spider thread. It's like if I don't do it, then it may be worse than I think. I can't explain it. I have to see what I don't want to see, but I can't read about any of the details or I'll have spider nightmares, seriously.:eek2:
It's that morbid fascination. The train wreck thing. You just gotta see it, even if it's horrible!

Very cool, @stracci!! have a very healthy respect for black widows! They are the ones which I’m most afraid of around here. But they do mind their own business mostly due to being weavers and staying around their webs.

I have only recently come to appreciate the spiders around due to a lovely experience with the cat faced orb weaver which lived in my kitchen window through her life span ( one year) and died in early summer. She grew from a teeny tiny baby with a tiny web to a large orb weaver. She taught me a lot just in reflection...how life can appear out of seemingly nothing, and the humility of living her life the way she did, in the window frame, and how she ‘weaved everyday anew in the space which she had.’ That became a metaphor for holding the space when my daughter was gone and diagnosed with MS. And she did some very goofy things which were quite funny, like missing while weaving and falling clumsily on her back into the sink a few times. She would lay on her back stunned and then come to and climb back up. Lol. I really miss her! Did a little ceremony when she died and my youngest 2 buried her because they loved ‘Sheila’. She was a gentle beautiful creature.

Here is a picture after she died.

Awww! It's wonderful that you let her live in your kitchen window. I remember when you mentioned this spider previously.
I think people are afraid of spiders, snakes and bats because so many are venomous and might give you a severe bite. I guess it's a primal fear for us humans.
But in reality, they just want to be left alone to do their thing.
Right now I have a funnel web spider that built a nest outside my kitchen window. I am observing him(her?) everyday, catching tiny bugs and living it's spider life.

She's a beaut. Here we have wood spiders that are big and furry and look like tarantulas. They're pretty scary. We also have brown recluses and you gotta watch out for those inside in the fall because they'll hole up in your shoes or anyplace dark. My only issue with spiders is when they build webs in my doorways and I walk right out into them sometimes. Then I feel terrible for ruining their web. :(2 And for messing up my hair. :mrgreen2:
i hate having to mess up a web some spider has worked all night on
we only have one common bad one - white tails which can give a nasty bite that tends to get horribly infected with a lot of people
they live in the tops of curtains
but all other spiders i live and let live
that black window is rather pretty

@redwood66 Yes, I watched that movie every time it came on TV. No idea why I would do that. Glutton for punishment? I have nothing against spiders per se, they eat other insects. But it's been a lifelong thing. Not sure phobia is the right word since obviously I do look at the pictures. Just can't read the stories.:eek2:

Well, the above mentioned black widow spider seems to have disappeared. The web is abandoned.
However, I found a brown widow under a chair in the backyard, and I got DH to photograph her with his macro lens. This one has stripes!

WHAT have I done to myself by opening this thread.

Nope, nope. Nope.

Thankfully we are in CO so not many spiders or insects in general, but especially dangerous ones.

Sorry, I know it's not the popular opinion sometimes - have always been of the thought... If I see a spider outside, shall totally leave alone or admire or give it a thumbs up - I'm in its home.

But should I find a spider indoors, it's getting evicted/wiped from existence if necessary.

very beauriful girl
yesterday i was pulling some weeds by the garage and there was a black spider sunning itself against the wall
the black was very jewel like
i left it alone and it left me alone as we enjoyed the sun together

It's that time of year again.
We have several black widows in our backyard. Here's one of the bigger ones. I tossed a small seed pod into her web, and she came out of the crevace to investigate. She's over an inch long, legs and all, and her abdomen is about 10mm.IMG_20200722_161013253.jpg

I always thInk black widow spiders are very elegant looking...with their slender and agile legs. We don’t see them where we live now but did when we lived in some parts of the south.

I kind of love them
Im happy to leave them alone
Mind you thats easy to say when we don't have hardly any poisonous spiders here

Opps
Didn't realise page 2 of thread !
Hello there Mrs Spider

I have a fennel plant in my backyard that is host to swallowtail caterpillars, but this year they’ve really been decimated by all the spiders. I may or may not have sent one near a baby caterpillar flying with a flick of my fingers.

I also had over a dozen baby spiders stroll into my bedroom one night. Stay outside!

Wow this Black Widow really looks just like a Red-Back, I wonder if they are related species?

We got plenty of spiders here (#straya) but I've never to be bitten thankfully. The Huntsman look the scariest coz they are huge but actually non-venomous. The Red-Backs in the other hand.... :-o

I did have to be careful with black widow spider control near the house and in the garage. Small kids and curious dogs don’t mix well with poisonous spiders. I reached into a toolbox once and had a too close for comfort encounter with a black widow.
I relocated as many as I could away from the house.

She's beautiful @stracci2000. From a distance.
