Black Cats and Halloween

Did you know that during Halloween, many animal shelters refuse to allow black cats to be adopted? According to them, many people adopt them to use as props for Halloween, then dump them on the streets when it''s over. When it''s NOT Halloween, the shelters have a tough time getting black cats adopted because visually they are the least appealing to many people, not to mention the superstition that comes with them.

I didn''t know any of this when we adopted our black kitty in August. She is just as dumb and cute as any other cat. Not an ounce of bad luck from her! Only property destruction and sleep deprivation.
At first I thought it will be fun to dress her up as a witch for Halloween, but now we are going to focus on trying our best to keep her away from the door when the kids come. I heard that you should keep your black cats safe inside during this time. Crazy people out there.
I guess there isn''t any point to this post...Just wanted to show her off. She''s almost 5 months old now.

I can''t believe people would use black kitties as Halloween props, that is so horrible.
This is going to be my first Halloween without my black kitty Mazi (she was 17). I never dressed her up, but I always gave her special treats on "her" holiday.

I have heard this before, I think that they also have been known to be the victims of evil things as well...there are some horrible people in this world.

That said, I have a black cat...her name is Abby and she is such a sweetheart! She is my 4th black cat and I have yet to find them unlucky

Choro, your kitty is adorable. I had a black cat for years, but the poor thing disappeared one day. I tell myself he ran away; I hope that nothing bad happened to him. He was a darling, and I had tons of good luck when he was with me.

Yep, there was a warning in the paper a few years back about black cats being harmed on Halloween. We had to give ours up for adoption

He had the coolest black cat halloween shape when he arched his back and he could have made kitty of the month calendar for October!

I have a black cat also and he is my favorite of my three cats. I also think he is the most beautiful of all three (the other two are a dilute calico and a brown tabby). If I were to choose a cat based strictly on looks, I would always choose a black one. It surprised me to read that they are the least appealing to many people.

Its a superstition thing. I have heard in the UK people have no trouble getting black cats adopted but do have trouble with white cats, which are considered unlucky there.

The same thing happens with black dogs, but I think they are all so beautiful

We are actually having fun watching her chew the rabbit. The rabbit is usually the monarch and beat up the old adults, but the kitty is too curious to be afraid

I think it's getting to the point where the kitty thing she's a rabbit...

Is that where you got your user name? FI's cat disappeared in July, and he still thinks someone catnapped him. I only hope that he is safe...I insist that this little girl will be a strictly indoor cat.

SilverLily, I think a solid black is gorgeous too! My only complaint is that it's so difficult to take good pictures of them.

IrishHussy, White cats unlucky!? Can you tell me why? The Aristocats must be a terribly unlucky movie then.

MC, Oh no! I can't imagine what it's like to have to give up my cat...I know what you mean by the Halloween shape!! In this picture, she isn't actually as big as she arched, but she made such a huge arch! It's amazing how large they can appear like that. This was the day she met my cat.

I don''t have 4 now, only the one. The other three were from when I was a kid. I had three at one time...2 were solid black and one had white paws. They had different faces so it was pretty easy to tell them apart

Thanks, Choro. I miss him! I hope he''s still safe and maybe with another family who loves him. I found him as an abandoned kitten, so it really makes me sad that he might be out there alone again. If I ever have another cat, it will definitely stay indoors for safety. I have pretty bad allergies, and I used to just suffer for my kitty, but I don''t know if I''d choose to do that again.

Adorable kitties!!

When I adopted my black kitty, I had put him on hold earlier in the day and went back a few hours later to pick him up. When I got there, a little girl was holding him. She wanted him so bad and her dad refused to get a black cat. He said she could have any other cat, but him! Worked out for me!

I think of today as his special day too. I wish he would "behave" and sit on the porch with me while we give out candy, but he takes off to explore any chance he gets.

Awe, what cute kitties in this thread! I have heard about the bad things some people will do to black cats on Halloween and it makes me really sad. We have a black kitty named Wakizashi (call her Zashi for short) and she''s my baby. We got her last October from a rescue and I''m glad that they didn''t keep us from adopting her just because it was near Halloween!

I wish I could say it surprised me that shelters have to have that policy, but it doesn''t.

People are cruel sometimes.

I''d heard black and black and white animals are often the last to go, and that grey animals can get overlooked, too. So, clearly, those are the kinds I wanted. I really can''t stand the thought of great animals getting left behind just because of their fur! So stupid.

Sometimes I really hate people. I have to wonder what this world is coming to when something as silly as a fur color gets out of hand.

That said, I LOVE my black kitty. She is the most cuddly of all my babies and even though she has a lot of orange now, and a white spot on her tummy, she is so beautiful. Her fur is long and shiny and so soft, and she would let me brush her all day if I wanted. I think all black kitties are gorgeous.

This is her when she was a tiny baby - she had the most scraggly fur, but she really grew into it and now she is gorgeous.

My baby Pearls is black too! Last night we had people over and I guess she got scared.. I was TERRIFIED she somehow got out (she is indoor only). Halloween would be the worst time for her to escape. Turns out she tore a hole in my roommates box spring and hid wayyyy in the back. Dumb cat!

Choro - so CUTE!!! We had to give up our kitty because we "took" him from a friend who was abusing him and we already had three cats and then another started hanging out at our house and before we knew it, five little overactive kitties were meowing at our bedroom door every morning. Too many cats!

Hey!

I have a teacher from the UK and she said that only here are black cats bad luck. She said where she is from they are good luck. How ironic because this is my black cat, who we named LUCKY!!!

She is beautiful and grooms herself sooo well!!!

Anyhoo, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 2 black babies. I've always loved black kitties...and they're the BEST luck ever...always here to keep me company and bring me joy....I wish Vinny would leave me alone at night though....I get no sleep!

When we got him, he was (and still is) all black with ONE white whicker...it fell out when I was petting him one day and hubby still accuses me of pulling it out (lol..which I'd never ever do)....

Question, do all black cats have yellow eyes? I know that all grey tip Siamese have blue eyes, but just wondering.
