Self-check and self-bag of groceries is KEY! I hate when grocery cashiers rub their noses, faces, hair, etc and then touch my groceries! ERGH! I go self-check whenever possible to avoid this!! When I do this, I don't get the flu or colds.

What I want to bitch and moan over: You cannot depend on ANYONE to do even a C level performance of their jobs.

So we have to be mini-experts at EVERYTHING in an attempt to save ourselves from $#it work.

I've seen this the last 20 years in the medical care I've received and seen patients receive. I fear an actual emergent medical situation for me or my husband because you have to then hand over your present and future to someone who most likely isn't paying attention in the slightest to carrying out their job. Sure, everyone is SUPER SORRY when you receive a bad outcome but still, there you are with your bad outcome and they toddle on to give some poor schlub the same $#itty treatment you received. If you get the ultimate in bad outcomes---death---your survivors get "thoughts and prayers." Blech. Save your thoughts and prayers AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING IN THE MOMENT WHEN ITS NEEDED.

I really like it when a cashier making change licks his fingers before counting the bills. :knockout:

NOT!

Okay... pharmacy rant to follow.

I am continually amazed at the lack of common sense in our society. Let me give you the play-by-play of a conversation I had with a patient this morning.

MSOP04: I wanted to let you know that your doctor called in 5 mg of drugA for 30 days, but since it's not available in that strength, I dispensed the 10 mg tablets with directions to "take 1/2 tablet once daily." That is why you have #15 instead of #30. #15 will last you 30 days. :))

CLUELESS PT: So you're only giving me #15?? :eh:

MSOP04: Yes, you'll be taking 1/2 tablet and #15 will last 30 days. Your insurance will pay for a maximum of 30 days supply at a time.

CLUELESS PT: But... you said my doctor wrote for #30, so why wouldn't I get #30??

MSOP04: You'll be getting a 30 days supply, which is what the doctor wrote for you. The only difference is that you'll be taking 1/2 tablet instead of 1 tablet... you'll still be getting 5 mg and have enough for 30 days. :)

CLUELESS PT: Hmmmm... I don't think that's right. If he wrote for #30, then I should get #30.

MSOP04: (proceeds to pull out calculator to show this patient) See? Taking 1/2 tablet every day for 30 days equals a quantity of #15. ...so you WILL be getting a full 30 days supply, which is what he wrote for you to have. Make sense now? 8)

CLUELESS PT: ...well, I still don't think that's right, but I'll just let my doctor know you shorted me and won't give me all #30 tablets LIKE HE PRESCRIBED!! :angryfire: :angryfire:

MSOP04: Okay, here's my card. Have him call me if he has any questions. Have a nice day. :wall: :wall:

Its a perfect illustration that one way or the other, the blood wasn't getting to the brain

Thanks, azstonie! I've found it's better to go ahead and counsel pts at the register... it decreases the likelihood of them calling back, screaming, "YOU FILLED MY MEDICINE WRONG!!"
