Does anyone know how to date Birks pieces (hallmarks etc.)? I have a moonstone and sapphire ring I bought at an antique show and I''m curious to know what year/era it is from.
Is birks the store you bought this piece?Do you have piuctures to post?Star sapphires were very popular during the early 1930s...see pictures of Jean Harlow,Mary Picford and joan crawford ,jean known for her star stone eng. ring and Mary and Joan their jewelry and huge collections of star sappire and ruby jewelry...The star sapphire was very popular duing the 1970s and most of these were synthetic and from Lindy Co.What are the hallmarks like?sent pictures.
I AM VERY SORRY ...I read to fast...moonstone and sapphire! This combination was popular at the turn of the twentith century about 1900-1930.also some popularity in the mid-1970s and early 1990s.Some companys like tiffanys and Van Cleef used moonstone in the late 1940s and the 1950s when light blue was fashionable for evening wear.Ingrid Burgman owned a beautiful moonstone and ruby necklace that she wore in the 1940s.
If its a piece that stamped with karat purity its been manufactured after 1908 when it became law to stamp gold pieces with purity.Birks just may be the jewelry store the ring was made for...or it could be the catalog company that the piece was made for by the TJE company...in the early part of the century ordering jewelry by catolog was popular and 10kt made mass production fashionable jewelry more affordable.
i googled BIRKS and found a jewelry company and manufactor that has manufactored jewelry since 1897...the ring could have been manfactured for them by TJE CORP....GOOD LUCK with the research.
