The personal style thread got me thinking. Does anyone have any particular item they used to wear that they look back on now and go "WHY DID I LEAVE THE HOUSE LIKE THAT?!" Mine is definitely gaucho pants. I''m 5''2" so looking at pics from when those were trendy, I cringe at how 3''9" I looked! Oh, and...um...well...I may have had a...poodle perm...in the 80s. OH, THE SHAME!

Remember this look? The ugliest acid wash denim jacket matched with more ugly acid wash jeans? I shudder just remembering the head to toe denim emsembles that I put together....

Saw a picture of myself in a half shirt/belly shirt. Even Kate Moss shouldn''t wear a belly shirt. I sure as H didn''t have any business...

About 6 years ago, I had a BF who told me he thought I wore my clothes too big. He took me shopping and started bringing things into my dressing room that were a size or two smaller than I had been buying. Lo and behold - he was right! I looked at least 10 pounds lighter in the smaller clothes. For some reason, I had thought that the baggier clothes looked better, so I had never even thought to try on smaller stuff, but once he made me see it with my own eyes, I realized he was right.

So my regret is not figuring that on my own a LONG time ago!

slouchy one shoulder ripped shirt a la flashdance. Oh that''s right---the 80''s.....

oh and garter belts...

Yep. The Eighties.

Let''s see, that decade was responsible for:

Acid wash jeans
Pleated jeans
Elastic waist jeans
Huge lace collars
Big Hair and Aqua Net
White hose
Black hose
Stirrup pants
Ugly a$$ lace up ankle boots with socks
Oversized sweaters in bold colors and big prints
Shoulder pads
Dress for Success Dynasty-style
Makeup ala Dynasty
Big, bold earrings
Faux jewel jewelry

And that''s just the crap I wore. I was more tasteful than most.

I used to have what we referred to as a "fan" in my bangs..I spiked my bangs up and then the rest was teased. I *kinda* wish I had a picture. It was a huge process. When it got too long for the fan to stand up I just teased it like the rest of the girls but I dyed black streaks in my blonde hair. I was a rebel!

Neon/Fluorescent colors....totally 80''s and totally
14.gif

But I hear they''re baaaaak! and all the teens have neon laces in their hightop sneakers these days.

Halter tops...with the midriff exposed. EEk...

Yeah... why were the 80''s so so bad??? I was a little girl during the 80''s, but I remember the ghastliness well.

Oh lord, there were so many. Luckily, at the time I thought I was s%*t hot thus remaining oblivious to the hideousness of it all.

There was a period of a few months when my hair was so bad, I should not have been allowed out in public. More considerate parents would have insisted on home-schooling.

Then there was the denim period. All denim, all the time. *shudder*

There was a summer when I was about ten where the only thing to be seen in was vibrant, colourful lycra bicycle shorts with an equally bright, baggy t-shirt. Not one person in my area didn't own at least one pair of vibrant, colourful, lycra bicycle shorts.

Then there was the neon era. I'd rather not talk about that.

There was a while there in college when it was acceptable -nay, expected - that your clothes resemble pyjamas as closely as possible.

But you asked for the worst, so...ugh, boy.
Let me set the scene: early-mid nineties, rave music was aaaaall the rage in Europe. My most favoured ensemble: gargantuan jeans, jeans that were so outrageously baggy they could have comfortably housed a small family. I believe Xworks and Eclipse were the hot brands at the time. I paired those babies with a leather waistcoat, under which went a tighter than tight longsleeved number, covered in all sorts of logos and prints. Topped it off with a completely ridiculous hairdo involving lots of gel, an equally ridiculous pair of trainers, and a massive pair of headphones.

I did not carry that look off well.

My 13 year old has a pair of skinny acid was jeans, they make me want to throw up every time I look at them! When my daughter was 13-14 ish she had a thing from brown lipstick. She has a full bottom
lip, not a pretty sight loaded up with stuff that is the color of poop. I used to tell her it looked bad, but she wouldn''t listen. Now she wants me to burn all the photos!

I had an outfit that involved stirrup pants, and a baggy collared shirt, with coat-tails hanging down to the back of my knees, then I'd roll up the sleeves and use a sleeve-clip to hold them up. Remeber those?

That I ever owned and wore stirrup pants. They are so unflattering to the ankle and knee...

haha I loved the 80''s! of course I was trying to be like the girls on the cover of vogue and I avoided the whole "big hair" thing lol

I can''t believe everyone is ripping on the 80''s when the 90''s and the completely unfeminine grunge look with pants hanging down past your ass isn''t being mentioned! Except by me haha

Oh yeah...I did this. Remember the "pouf" of bangs--half curled up, half curled down, teased into a rat''s nest and then frozen with Aqua Net? Or the big over-sized Coca Cola sweatshirts?

Man, considering that I''m going to an 80s party next weekend, this is the best timing I''ve ever had!!! I just thought of another bad one I had--my 90s JNCO and Airwalk skater shoes phase. My mother finally got angry one day, grabbed a pair of my JNCOs and my little sister and made both of us get in this pair of pants. Yes, my pants were literally large enough that my sister and I could both fit into them at the same time because the legs were so wide that my whole body fit in one pants leg! This was paired with black fingernail polish (which I still love, haha!!) and either black lipstick or brown lipliner that was much darker than the rest of the lip. Eek!

ditto Porridge on the colourful bike shorts -I was soo guilty of that when I was in elementary school.. my other main regret is stirrup pants and giant plaid shirts..

that is a delightful visual luv2sparkle! mmm pooplip.. :)

Looking back now it was hideous, but I thought I was very stylish. I remember the Madonna look. I rocked that. I wore the tights with the little fold down lace socks with all the bracelets. I also remember acid washed denim. I remember this yellow stretch denim shirt that I would wear with a black off the shoulder shirt. The outfit that I remember loving and wearing as soon as it was clean was black stirrup pants and an oversized sweater with shoulder pads.

My favorite outfit in fifth grade was a matching sweatshirt and ruffled skirt made of sweatshirt material. The theme was COWS
23.gif
Jumping cows on the sweatshirt and cow fences with hay on the skirt ruffles. Pair with red slouchy socks, a red turtleneck and Keds. I thought I was the hottest thing to hit fifth grade that year!

Hypercolor clothes! The kind that would change colors when you sweat. Totally attractive.

Ditto the 1980's. So can anyone tell me why the heck it is back in fashion??? Has anyone been to a mall lately and seen what is on offer for the teenagers to buy?

My personal regrets:

- My pink stirrup jeans (circa 7-8 years old). I liked them so much I even put PATCHES on the knees when they wore out.

- My brief baggy backwards phase (also dubbed the "Kriss Kross" phase - I was 12 - yup, "I missed the bus" on that one!).

- Oversized giant plaid shirts or giant oversized sweatshirts (circa - teenager).

- Pinned jeans - circa 11-12 years old (the look skinny jeans try and replicate now, without the use of safety pins).

- Black tights under jean shorts - circa 11-12 years old

- The brief period of time where I went more for the "skank" look when I went out to the bars (circa 18 years old). I quickly realized skank did not mean sexy! I was reminded of this phase when I was in Vegas a couple weekends ago.

I will NEVER ever ever regret my spandex-with-red-trim-and-silver-mesh dress I dubbed my Michael Jackson dress though. I wore that thing 2-3 times a week. I was 5.

I don't regret the 80s AT ALL! All of those mall bangs, perms, stirrup pants, neon colors, shirts tied around those plastic thingies--they all make for HILARIOUS pictures!

I think I owned 86 pairs of giant plastic earrings in the 80s, too. I'm not even joking.

My only real fashion regret is the pair of very thick, squared, black-rimmed glasses that I bought in college. They were very in at the time, and I looked very bad in them. And I have the pictures to prove it. I REALLY regret that I wore them while I was studying in London, so all of my London photos are tainted by those horrible glasses.

Otherwise, I love all of those trends that look so awful now.

And, guess what? The 80s? THEY'RE BAAAAAAACK!!!! I've been coveting these Guess boots for a couple weeks, and they really reek of the 80s. But I LOVE THEM!

And if you don't believe me, check out my favorite site, lookbook. It is FILLED with girls wearing awesome ankle boots. AND clogs with socks.

oh goodness

I had a bowl cut. I''m a girl.

Biker shorts with tee shirts and sam and libby''s

Overall shorts with ankle boots (like paddock boots for riding)

Jeans that came above my belly button

ridiculous numbers of little silver pendant charms that meant NOTHING

I used to wear a turquoise sweater over a hot pink button down shirt. With earrings to match. I also wanted to be just like Alyssa Milano so I got my hair permed like hers. It didn't hold though.

One of my friends used to wear sweater dresses, and I think some were off the shoulder. It was very risque for a middle schooler.

ETA: Did you cuff your jeans and then roll them up a bit? I can't remember what it was called but I think it was called something. I used to do that too.

I remember that. I also remember tucking the legs of my jeans into those huge, slouchy socks and wearing pumps with socks. Ugh. And poodle perms. Double UGH. I can hardly stand to look at any photos from 6th grade through junior year in high school, which is when I finally rebelled and refused to get another perm.
