Bigger/better Lightbox coming in October!

See article in JCK for details.

Interesting.
1. double the carat weight double the price, not 4 x which is what the rest of the LGD companies are doing - i.e. trading off natural diamonds.

See article in JCK for details.

2. Seems like De Beers are breaking their own rules (that they told Andrey and me 2 or 3 years ago in Vegas).
They are going to be grading and differentiating the quality of a manufactured product. Big mistake De Beers!

See article in JCK for details.

3. 350KW hours per one carat diamond is about 2 and a half weeks for average US households (close to the largest in the world and 4 times the world average).
So for global warming info a LGD uses 10 weeks of energy per household of a couple of months per person.
Dont ya just luv stats!

Swear I am not following Garry around.

This move might kneecap all the sellers of meh-quality LGD.

hahaha
I just threatend to knee cap Crutches on another thread
hahahaha

This is great, can’t wait to see what it actually rolls out like.

Interesting that the article describes their original stones as G through J in color. I have one of their 0.5ct stones that was originally in a pendant setting, and while the "very good" cut is probably a pretty accurate representation - although I would guess it to be at the better end of the "very good" range - the color is definitely colorless. It is quite noticeably whiter than my G stones graded by GIA and AGS. I don't have the expertise to assess it's clarity of course, but it's utterly eye-clean, looks wonderfully clear, and sparkles like crazy.

That's what good brands do - they under sell and over provide.
That is why I am surprised that De Beers would bother with grading.
It adds a lot to the cost. Roughly the costs are then: equal parts growing, cutting and grading.
But maybe greed is good?

I agree with this, re: color. I have one 1ct, and one 1.15ct from them, both among the “earliest” stones within their respective launch windows.

Comparably to my natural F, they are quite close, if not spot-on in color and very white. Certainly only a very good cut, but great color. Interested to see how that may change as they sort stones for these new offering.

The way I understand it is that the energy costs scale quadratically which is why double the carats = 4x the cost. So either Lightbox has better tech or deeper pockets or both. Either way an exciting time.

I'm excited to see the 2ct! Would be interesting to see if I can finally differentiate between the excellent cut diamonds vs good cut (bigger diamonds should be easier to see?). Hopefully there's more than 1 at launch :)

I am definitely getting the 2ct. If I can, of course. It might sell out too quickly.

I love my husband, but it has been three years since he promised me a ring and nada. I am so turning that into a ring. Round isn't my favorite cut and I don't even care.

I feel like even if there are limited quantities at first, they'll eventually release more inventory, similar to the 1cts.

I have been writing for a long time that bigger CVD diamonds will cost less per carat.
Unlike natural diamonds.
I bet De Beers are making a bigger margin on larger diamonds.

They are crushing the current rip offs who are trading off natural diamonds!

I would love to see Lightbox add some fancy shapes, like cushion, emerald, and a heart in the larger carats!

3/4's of diamonds are polished round. It is a huge waste of rough diamond material.
i think the main reason is that GIA started grading cut - and does not grade fancy shape cuts.
Before 2006 around 2/3rds were polished round.

At what point will people who see someone wearing a large diamond ring just assume it’s a manmade diamond? (That is, at what point in time and at what carat size?) And how will that affect the market for natural diamonds?

At what point will people who see someone wearing a large diamond ring just assume it’s a CUBIC ZIRCONIA or MOSSANITE? (That is, at what point in time and at what carat size?) And how DID that affect the market for natural diamonds?

Interesting question from @glitterata and remark from @Garry H (Cut Nut) .

There are people including here on PS who claim they can easily tell the difference between moissanite and diamonds at a glance, but with LGD, I haven’t heard anyone say they can tell the difference by looking at a single stone with the naked eye. Are people more or less likely to form assumptions about things they lack the ability to verify?

On a related note, wonder what will be the upper size limit for casual daily wear for the majority of people (taking into account regional differences). Also wonder if people conversely will wear smaller diamonds than they do now if big LGDs are indistinguishable from earth-made diamonds and thus there is no inherent display of wealth.

Hi Crutches,
There are many topics here.
When CZ's were a big thing 30-40 years ago, lots of TV shows took CZ rings around jewellers and they could not tell the difference. (I know, most of us are as dumb as donkey droppings).

One of my staff a decade ago, who was one of my best students ever in the GAA diploma of diamond technology, failed to identify moissanite (thx for spellin). that was a real hoot - a drop dead girl (not a woman) came into the store - she had just come back from LA and had a necklace that looked like it was worth half a mill. Gift from an man (older than a boy). I took one look and - boy was she p****d!

Another story: The American Society of Ladies who Lunch-a-Lot lecture i gave in Melbourne - Argyle Pink Diamonds: Texan lady (no, not a girl) "They're reaaaally cUte, but hey, I'aam from Texas, and they's just waaay too smmaall!
