Big eternity band

My fiancé is getting me a big eternity band for our engagement.

We found this sparkling band from Moussaieff.

What do you think about it? Is it worth ??

I’m looking for advice if we should buy the band or not

Hi! This is one huge thing. Do you have a hand shot? It could be a bit much. I love big stones - but more so as solitaires - but huge bands can look weird, depending on the hand. If it is rather uncomfortable to wear I‘d think twice. Maybe going a bit smaller but with better clarity stones, especially when choosing emerald cut diamonds - which I think can be gorgeous in an eternity band.

I don't understand why you're asking whether you should buy the band when -- because the one you posted is not the right size for your finger -- you've already commissioned Moussaieff to make this kind of ring for you.

With this kind of ring where it seems to be quite substantial, it might be quite uncomfortable to wear. it will be substantial that it will push the other fingers on either side apart. It may take some time to get used to it. Also with the size of each stone, being a step cut, it will mean that the diamond will get prints on it.. the prints will come from either side of that ring finger, and of course, if you like playing with the ring, then your finger prints will get on it. It may dull the appearance of the stones.. however, it just means that you need to clean it everyday.

Congrats, and i cant wait to see the ring on your finger!

Well, as for rings - which are, in my opinion, a very personal piece of jewelry, I prefer custom made pieces. But this is personal taste. But I certainly like the classic, elegant style of a Tiffany ring. Would you also prefer a band or rather a classic solitaire?

It really depends. If you experiment in chemistry with acidic ingredient in class or doing field research as an archaeologist, then probably not. If you teach law or economics then the biggest danger would be to chip it on the table when gesticulating while passionately trying to make your point.

I have only skimmed the GIA, and the reports are from 2009? I would consider asking the vendor having the reports updated.

As for wearing them, if this was my ring and i was comfortable with the substantial width of the ring ie not impinging on other fingers, then i would wear it. i woudl also carry a cleaning cloth with me to make sure i keep them clean... acutally, strike that. i woudlnt carry a cleaning cloth forever,,, i would do it for a short period of time, then i woudl get sick of cleaning them and wear the rings knowing they are going to get prints on them.. I would def clean them weekly... i am not that good at keeping things clean on a daily basis. LOL

i also note in the sizing of the stones that you are getting- there seems to be quite a range in length from 7.52 to 8.54mm and conversely, variations in width and depth. I am hopeful that these minor variances will not be any visual difference in the size of stones in the setting that has been chosen. And, when you do get the ring, check to see if the keel/ base of the diamond doesn't touch your finger, as it will irritate.

I have not checked out the vendor, and am sure that they will make the best band for you.

Moussaieff is going to tear down the ring you posted & use only stones that correspond to those GIA reports? If so, they must be eagerly anticipating the commission because it would be impossible for them to do that for every ring size.

Don't think you should consider this a wear-to-work ring. Should you decide to proceed, can you specify (more or less) which of those emerald cuts they use? Although I trust that they can fabricate the ring to accommodate-minimize the differences in depth and length amongst the stones, I myself would not be happy with the color-clarity spreads amongst them (I do realize that you may be less "sensitive" to diamond color so that spread may not matter to you). Even in an emerald-cut eternity ring of this carat weight, greater uniformity is possible. E.g.,

15.18 carat E-F VS1-2 Emerald Cut Diamond Eternity Band (GIA Certified, Platinum)

Platinum diamond eternity Band, featuring 15 GIA certified Emerald cut diamonds having a total weight of 15.18 carats with color and clarity of E-F VS1-VS2 respectively. All GIA graded but original GIA certificates not present copies only.

I share @gregchang35 's concern re the age of the GIA reports. Since the lab reports all have the same December 17, 2009 date, it seems very likely that the ring was originally fashioned in late 2009 or early 2010 from the collective suite. The diamonds are not as well protected as they would be had they been channel-set.& given how much diamond surface-edge area is exposed, it's quite possible that at least one of the diamonds has suffered somewhat during the possibly 10 years of previous ownership, even if it was not worn daily. But fyi: GIA does not accept mounted, D-Z diamonds for grading, so Mousiaeff will need to be amenable to removing the stones from the current ring if you'd like fresh GIA reports.

A recommendation before you make any payment for such a commission (it won't be a refundable purchase!): buy a cheap cz eternity band of the approximate dimensions & wear that for awhile to see if you find it physically comfortable enough for even occasional wear of several hours at a time, how often you inadvertently knock it against something, etc.

I suspect you will want a smaller band for everyday, but, who knows - you will know after a couple of weeks of living with it. Moussaief might suggest a companion band - perhaps matching in some way - eg. E-W set, smaller diamonds of similar cut; then again - I am sure they have heard such requsts before & may have the best way to address.

I am quite curious about the cut of the stones - they may well be a slightly modified emerald cut I am seriously taken with & seems to be much more often done on smaller stones [these are not so small!]
