Hello PSers,

Hoping you will help me make a decision. At any time between now and next August, I'm looking to purchase an upgrade diamond/ring.

I'm not particularly color sensitive and don't mind a bit of tint (lucky me). So I decided that I'm willing to sacrifice color for size. I've been looking for a stone in the 8-8.5 mm range, with flexibility to go smaller for the "perfect" stone or ring. On clarity, I'm only looking for eye clean.

My dilemma is that I was convinced that I wanted either an OEC (undecided on whether it should be actual vintage or modern vintage) or an EC. that hasn't stopped me from keeping an eye on MRBs, though. And I found this:

It was love at first sight -- especially for the price. My budget for a stone (not including setting) is actually $12-15k, so I would have a lot of room for a nice setting. I put the stone on hold and have until Monday morning to decide.

I currently have a pair of OMC earrings that I love. Purchased from a fellow PSer. I also have a 5 stone from IDJ with PS quality diamonds that I adore. I've also determined that I seem to prefer modern settings with a vintage vibe, rather than actual vintage settings.

This BG Cape seems like it is a rare combo that results in a great price and ticks all my boxes for a MRB. My only hesitation is whether I would change my mind and wish that I had purchased an OEC. Or, given that I would have a lot of budget left, whether I would be just as happy buying this and leaving the door open to a smaller OEC in the future.

The BGD return and upgrade policies are a major plus. I would get a simple and returnable solitaire if I purchase, so that I'd have time to decide whether to return and if not return, to d cider on my ideal setting.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's thoughts.

The BGD Cape stone is beautiful! I saw it a few days ago and thought that someone who doesn’t mind a little color will get a great deal :)

However, a MRB is very different than an OEC. Have you been able to see and try on both in person? Where is your heart?

The BGD is a very nice diamond, and the strong blue fluorescence helps to look like whiter, and the price is unbeatable. But what do you really want?
A bigger stone only independently from the cut, or a stone with the charm of history?
If size is your main criteria, you could be very happy with the BGD stone, but if you are really longing for an OEC, a big cape RB isn’t the cure!
Please, take it as an opinion from someone with an N colored OEC, which I adore!!

I've seen and tried on both in person. I love both but they are very different looks. Hence, my dilemma.

I love OECs and MRBs leave me cold so you can probably guess how I voted :mrgreen2:
But in saying that, Yssie’s lovely huge M in an Erika Winters setting is pretty delicious so I think this M is gorgeous and would be a fantastic buy.
Were it me buying with that budget, I’d get any one of these 2.36 K SI1 antique cushion, 2.40 N SI1 transitional or 2.49 L VS1 (slightly outside your budget but maybe negotiable? Gorgeous tho!)
I looked some more - on JBG there are some real beauties and well within your budget - look at this 2.16 M VS2  but also this 2.15 K SI1, 2.11 K VS1 and this 2.22 N SI2

Appreciate the links foxinsox. I'm avoiding CA vendors for now.

I see that the voting trend is toward the OEC. MRB has never been off the table for me. I just thought I'd get the ideal cut stone(s) in the future.

Original plan was to go for the large OEC and then maybe a 3 stone with ideal cuts in the future.

The current scenario would be to go for the large MRB and then a smaller OEC in the future.

First world problems...

So glad I found PS to share my obsssion.

Are you sure Yessie’s diamond is an M?

I have an O color AVR which I just had set. If you want to see the color, I have a thread in Show Me the Bling. I am in love with my stone! But to be honest, I only can handle colors below J in antique or newly cut antique style stones. I’d either go with near colorless in a modern round, or any color in OECs as long as it’s a yellow undertone. But as I said at the beginning of that thread, the key to how a low color diamond is going to look depends greatly on the setting! An M is going to be tinted.

I'm convinced. OEC it is. Thanks everyone!

No and looking it up I see it's not. I don't know why I remembered it as an M.
