I know that diamonds are extra sparkly when set as solitaires, but does a bezel set mask any of a diamond''s sparkle/light?

I''m going to have my ideal cut round diamond set in a bezel halo and I''m concerned that it won''t sparkle as much as those that are prong set. Is this true, or is it a foolish fear? I still have time to change my mind, but I love the clean, simple look of a bezel.

What should I do?

Well, 'bezel setting' does not have to be a diamond sunk in a bucket of metal. It could be like THIS (or the Lucida bezel) - a setting with a farely open uder the girdle line. Some call this 'girdle setting', but I do not know how popular is this term.

Whatever effect the bezel setting has, it is minimized if the diamond has a thin girdle and a great cut so that having the pavilion left out in the open is not critical.

Bezel settings add contrast - so if that is something positive for you, than all for the better.

If you do go through some jewelry shops looking for the difference, I would suggest finding a good one (Tiffany? the Etoile rings are ebzels and they should have one for you to take a look) because the cut counts in this comparison quite a bit. Also, it is better to compare rings on hand because otherwise bezel or no bezel settings get light through the back - which never happens on the hand, of course.

That is pretty much all that comes to mind.

There are two useful examples on this thread and you could definitely ask the two ladies about their personal impressions beyond what they already said on the thread, I guess

I have a one carat diamond that was originally set in a standard six prong setting. When I upgraded I had it reset in a semi-bezel setting as a right hand ring and I can tell you that it is just as sparkly as it was before! Also my new three stone ring has semi--bezel set diamonds and those diamonds sparkle like mad. If you like the bezel settings I would go for it and not worry about it.

Hello.
One of my stones is in a bezel setting, and it doesn''t affect the sparkle at all. The only thing I miss is not being able to look at the side of the stone and see the colors bouncing around inside, but I''m not having the ring re-set. (It''s on page 4 of the "show me your rings with halos" thread.)

No worries. The bezel set doesn''t cut down the sparkle factor at all.

As you can see from the picture Val posted, these are two rings that Mara and I tried on while at Whiteflash. The only difference between them? One was prong-set, the other halo. I happened to prefer the prong-set look; she preferred the halo. BOTH were sparkly!

I''m sure that it will look just fine. A prong setting will technically allow for more light return and reflection in most cases, but I doubt that you will see a significant difference. Bezel settings are not only beautiful but very popular as well. Good luck....

My new wedding ring is bezel set and it sparkles like mad...it''s very open on the underside though. I also have a 3-stone ring and matching pendant, and they both sparkle nicely as well!

It''s also a lot of peace of mind for me....nice and safe for my diamond!
