Hello Folks,

New poster here. Been lurking and reading for a few months now. Great website!

I'm narrowing down my search now and am deciding between 3 H&A stones from Brian Gavin. 6 prong solitaire setting. All are similar specs .8 G VS2

All scored 1.5 or below on HCA

1. HCA 1.4

2. Gridlle is slightly thicker HCA 1.5

3. Inclusions are more off to the side on this diamond HCA 1.1

I also have this .84 H VS2 on my list. Ever so slightly bigger, couple hundred less $$. From my research I feel G is a happy medium but have been eyeing this one as well

4. HCA 1.6

Anyone have thoughts on the above? I know I'm picking hairs here...even the aset & idealscope are pretty comparable...i'm torn!

Thanks

You really are picking at hairs. They could be matches for earrings.

If you go for the H are you going to be able to afford a slightly nicer setting? If so, go for that. If not, I'd stick to a nice G. You can pretty much never go wrong with a G (absent cultural preferences).

Thanks. Too much information makes this even harder!

On another note I just saw this stone at a local jeweler (NYC diamond district)

http://www.gia.edu/cs/Satellite?reportno=2165751216&childpagename=GIA%2FPage%2FReportCheck&pagename=GIA%2FDispatcher&c=Page&cid=1355954554547

.9 G VS2

HCA 2.4

I know HCA is really an elimination tool...been eliminating at 2.0 but don't want to rely on it too hard

can probably get him down to 4800 on the stone

It is a very pretty stone according to my consumer eyes

Thoughts on this vs the BG stones? It's not branded as hearts and arrows but I would be fine with that if the consensus is the difference is neglegible in real life.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

All numbers are within the ideal ranges, except it is the combination of those numbers that is not desirable. 35/41=deep/deep. The HCA score reflects this.
You want shallow/deep or deep/shallow combo.

It is not a bad stone. In fact, there are beautiful stones with those proportions. Pricing is average. It is just you can do better with $4800.

thanks

as much as i would like to buy from a local jeweler for maintenance/resizing ease etc...i also really want a super ideal cut, which I'm sure can be found especially in the NYC diamond district...the question boils down to is it worth the time and effort it will take to find it when i can pay (maybe) a little more and get something from BG that i know is near perfect

as much as i would like to get closer to that magical 1ct number, from everything i understand it is probably better to go with a .8 super ideal than a .9 ideal

BG .9ct is about 7k which is out of the question

If you want super ideal and are in NY, why not reach out to Good Old Gold? They aren't far (although not in the Diamond District).

I know nothing about NY or the diamond district. IDJ is a PS vendor and located in the diamond district.

Triple X, HCA=1.6, potential AGS Ideal, potential near super ideal. $4,478.00

I cannot comment on the inclusions, because of no photo.

Edit..
That stone you posted with 35/41. This is the best scenario

It really depends on the actual angles. GIA rounds numbers quite a bit.

thanks for all of the advice

I've reached out to good old gold to see what they can come up with and to begin a conversation with them...would love to pay them a visit if they find something in my range...they seem to have great reviews and competitive prices to branded places such as BG, we shall see. i like the idea that they are local

i do have an opportunity to visit the BG shop in houston (business trip) so i think i am going to pay them a visit see what they have to say about a few of the stones i listed etc.

god this is stressful.
