We need some advice on the best way to get my moms ring to a store 1200 miles away! Can we trust USPS? FedEx? We have it independently insured but we're concerned about attempting this as it's worth well over $100k.

Thoughts?

You have to use something like Brinks or Malca Amit. You cannot insure jewelry for that much at FedEx, USPS, etc. The only possibility is if her private insurance coverage says they will cover for loss if she ships via one of those methods. I wouldn't personally risk doing that unless you have that in writing and the item is easily replaceable. If it is, then USPS Registered Mail is very secure, and others would say overnight express through Fed Ex would mean the least travel time.

As mentioned above, the usual way jewelers do it is Brinks and Malca Amit. Both have offices in most big cities although I'm not sure they're take a shipment from an individual. You may do well to make a deal with a local jeweler or appraiser. Your insurance agent may have suggestions as well. Depending on your temperament and the nature of your current insurance, it may be both cheaper and feel better to just buy an airplane ticket and hand deliver it. You mention that it's going to a store. Does the recipient store have suggestions?

+1

I also would have expected the receiving store to offer suggestions on the method of shipping. If they are accustomed to dealing with jewelry, especially of this value, they should have a preferred method.

The insurance agent recommended "any company that has tracking." Said we are covered until the moment it reaches the receiver; when I questioned the agent about utilizing this mode I was assured we were covered. This concerned me - and I'm not really comfortable following their suggestion.

I will look into Brinks and Malca Amit, but this would indeed be shipping from an individual to a business...and I'm thinking it may very well be cost prohibitive compared to the suggestion of "buying a plane ticket."

It may be best to do a face - to - face with the store that is assisting us due to the amount involved here?
