best way to buy e-ring online?

what is the recommended way for a person to buy an e-ring online? from what i''ve been reading so far, most people get the diamond first, then have it sent to an independent appraiser so that they can look at it and have it assessed before they make their purchase. afterwards, you are supposed to find the ring and have the diamond set. am i missing anything?

personally, i was just thinking about purchasing the diamond and ring together, having the completed ring sent to me, and if i don''t like it, i''ll return the ring. is this a bad idea?

also, if i were to do this, would i be able to bring the completed ring to an appraiser to have the diamond looked at? or would the appraiser be unable to tell me much about the diamond since it is set?

If you buy the stone from a very reputable place like GOG, WF, JA, ERD, then your plan is probably fine. However, you will probably need an appraisal for insurance purposes, and you should definitely insure that baby! I decided to have the stone appraised before being set and after being set, but in subsequent purchases I was more comfortable with the vendors and did not have a formal appraisal.
