I'm taking my packing tips from this lady!

Ballet flats take up the smallest space.

Can anyone recommend a great messenger bag?
That's an awesome post!

Another thing I like to do is buy dresses while we're away, so I never bring enough clothes. It's a lot of fun, and then I come home with really cute items that I could never buy in this country.

I use this as a cross body purse, which suits me because I don't like carrying around a lot of stuff. I love it! I've taken it on several trips and it's been great. It holds the essentials and it's small enough to keep on my lap if needed (at a restaurant, for example, as TGal mentioned.

http://www.etsy.com/shop/aHelpingHandBag?section_id=7613489 (There are many prints here, but I have a solid color bag).

I've used the simple thin travel wallets with the strap and worn them as a cross body "purse" and they worked well, too. I do prefer my current bag though because it holds more without adding a ton of extra weight.

Eta: Here's a pic of a Kindle case this Etsy seller also has, so you can get an idea of the size. http://www.etsy.com/listing/98685365/kindle-3-cover-case-nook-case-ereader

Thanks for the link! Great tips for sure.....can't wear flats, but like the rest!

Here is an old thread on messenger bags....

Anyone bought Estate jewellery while in Europe? Naturally my first thought turns to.....baubles.....but my poor French and nonexistent Italian might make it difficult..... My favorite ring is one bought in Copenhagen--at Jensen. Someone's old ring became my treasure and was hoping to fall upon something memorable for me....

TGal, I'm almost afraid to click on anything you post for fear I will buy it!!! I collect Tumi bags and love the Sumatra you posted!!! Sharon, you will love it for quick day jaunts and there are zippered compartments inside for your wallet. Very secure against your body. Also, it looks awesome in black with the peep of red! It's one of my favorite bags for hands free fun.

TGal, you have great taste!!! I'm now a Not Rational fiend thanks to you! Just got the EK Sub!!! I may love it even more than the Hansel! Thanks for alerting me to these awesome bags! Now I need a travel wallet?!? These threads are so dangerous!!! LOL

I didn't read all of the replies, but I bought a new purse for travel and love it. I end up using it as my go-to bag most days now. Its from Radley and I found it on sale in black during a trip to the UK. I believe they ship to the US.

http://www.radley.co.uk/Product/85561_Regent_Sale_Handbags.aspx

Its a cross body bag so it doesn't hurt my shoulder and feels secure. It also zips closed so no worries about stuff falling out. The inside space isn't huge, but it fits all of my travel documents, wallet, and sunglasses.

ETA: The best part is that I can keep it in front of me if I'm in a crowd and lay it on my lap while in a restaurant without actually taking it off. Its also very good quality leather.

I actually don't have great taste...I have PRACTICAL taste. ::) I have never seen a different style of NR bag, but hope you like the EK sub! So you have the Sumatra too? I really love it and I get compliments on it all the time...quite bizarre, since it's just a nylon travel bag!

And no, you do not need a travel wallet! :rodent:

When I was running around Europe/Med. a few years back the only things I carried was a small crossbody camera case similar to this one:
http://www.ebags.com/product/mounta...compact-camera-case/146219?productid=10007355

I've since misplaced it (sorry this isn't the exact one I used, but close) and will need to replace it before I travel to Africa later this year, mine was a little larger, but had the zipper + buckle flap combo, a cross body shoulder strap, and a clip on the back to attach it to the waistband of my jeans. It was the perfect size to slide my passport, a credit card and some cash in behind my camera (Canon G10- so not a huge camera), it was light to carry, easy to put in my lap when sitting, and to rest a hand on when especially crowded.

I made some contigency plans for dressier outfits, but this little guy worked so well it's all I ended up using and I didn't have any problems. I mostly keep my chapstick in my pocket, but I think it even had a little side pouch for that too!

My favorite thing in Italy was visiting Pompeii- definitely spend a day there if you can!

HI:

Hey, does anybody care what I ended up with? Looked at several cross body bags today.

I loved the Tumi Mooreland all leather--it was lightweight and stylish. Ultra soft. Zipper top, side pocket, and no flap. In black.

http://www.tumi.com/product/index.jsp?c=1114083&productId=12516210&prodFindSrc=paramNav

I loved the Mens VL Thomas Damier in Graphite. Small stylish, lightweight. Place for cell and inside pockets, etc. Zipper top and side pocket.

I loved a bag made by a Canadian company called M0851. Lightweight and good looking bag. Ultra soft. Zipper top. Black.

http://www.m0851.com/webstore/FR-bandouliere-en-cuir-sacs-BALFL52

I love the Mens Feragammo Men's shoulder bag. Lightweight and stylish, zipper top, zip inside compartment. Black embossed leather.

http://www.ferragamo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategories_32650_37050#/product/3074457345616706834/6148914691233379037/434910

All of the bags I saw fit criteria I had: dark color or black, rectangular shape, lightweight, zipper top/pockets, adjustable shoulder strap. Leather or canvas. Because I am not drawn to messenger or cross body bags, it had to have an element of style--incentive to wear it again or outside of travelling. I did not want a postman style bag--flap top. I would have preferred the lining to be a light color (easier to see inside), but alas, only the M0851 bag was a neutral color.

It will come as no surprise to anyone here that I am a label/brand hound. Did that sway my choice--in the final analysis, yes.

I ruled out the Tumi and the M0851 because of the ultra soft leather. Now I know that patina on leather bags is desirable--I have no issue with that--but both of these bags would mark and the way I treat purses; it wouldn't take me long. It is currently raining in Paris and the bags would potentially spot/mark. I am sure they would dry and be fine and the marks would rub out--but I needed criteria to eliminate choices. Gorgeous bags, tho and I really did have a difficult time putting them down.....

The LV was my first choice--but the price deterred me outright. If I was going to spend that kind of coin--I would get the LV bag of my desire--not a bag of this style.

I ended up with the Men's Feragammo bag. THe embossed leather will stop it from appearing worn. Although I didn't plan on spending this amount of $$, I felt as a brand it was only a bit more than the Tumi, but would ultimately wear better in the long run, and therefore worth the extra cost b/c of type of leather. Fact is, it is a good looking bag--not gender specific--and it will be useful in the long run. Hence it satisfied my criteria and I got a "brand" to boot!

cheers--Sharon
