I have a couple of weeks to pick out my engagement ring. I’ve done a lot of research and everything seems to point to James Allen. However, a handful of reviews I’ve read (most have been positive but some have had issues) has me a little hesitant. Any opinions would be appreciatedf! (If something like this has been posted before, please point me to it, and my apologies.)

I’m drawn to halo settings with cushion cut diamonds, however, I’m also interested in the pave setting with a cushion cut, but feel as though the cushion cut ends up looking like a princess cut once the prongs surround it.

A well made setting will not make a cushion look like a princess, but will highlight the squareness. (See avatar) Have you seen all the types of cushions? I'd look at August vintage cushions to see if you like that type of cut, as well as antique cushions and modern cushions. Though they are all cushions, they are different in their faceting.

With cushions, you really don't want to limit yourself to a single vendor. They are hard to find. For modern cushions, we routinely look at JA, BlueNile, EnchantedDiamonds, BrialliantlyEngaged, and others. If you like antique style-cushions, then the circle would broaden to include a bunch of other vendors.

Relative to settings, I think the reason many cushions can end up looking square is that many cushion halos are actually straight sided with rounded corners only. You want to see a fully curved perimeter. If the stone is very elongate, then they may be some straightness. The other thing is the prongs in many settings are bulky -- so they emphasize the corners. All that comes down to the vendor. It seems that you may be very detailed about what you want. So, I'm thinking that depending on budget, you may be better looking at a custom setting. The other thing is that old cuts (whether real antiques or modern cut to look antique) have a faceting arrangement that tends to avoid the squarish look.

This is a wonderful halo setting for a cushion. VC shows it with a antique cut, but it would still have that nice curvature in a modern cushion.
