So while going through old posts on this thread I came across this post by @HDer (I was super impressed by the effort and the research you did, and it paid off in spades! The ring is stunning!)

Im sure there are other stories like this on PS - maybe some of the old timers could share links here so that us newbies can get some of that rush of excitement? Hope this is the right place for this thread!

What we did is definitely not for everyone, but if you're interested in getting the best deal possible, what I would highly recommend right now would be to sign up for an IDEX account: http://www.idexonline.com/index

As noted in other threads IDEX has overtaken RapNet as the largest B2B diamond exchange, and accounts are currently free. It'll really let you peer behind the curtain and see approximately what the vendor markups are, who the wholesale players are, and how much diamonds of different grades trade for against each other.

Interesting! I’m not in the market for a diamond right now but I still checked out the website, looks like I need to provide company information though, to sign up?

Hi all!!

IDEX is only B2B...... according to IDEX, there's systems in place to prevent non-dealer/cutters/etc from accessing the site.

In their terms of service they have three categories: Visitors, Users, and Guaranteed Diamond Transactions TM Member: http://www.idexonline.com/Conditions.aspx

Currently, there isn't a prohibition on non-industry folks becoming "Users" that I can see, but I'm sure once they start charging it'll weed a lot of people out.

Also, as you know, the barrier to entry in terms of putting up a website and listing some inventory from RapNet or IDEX these days is incredibly low. Starting as a "consultant" or even a retailer is easier than ever. The hard thing is finding the customers.

Probably this thread would fit.

I can’t say you’re wrong..... but I just spoke with the administrator of IDEX and he was very clear.
If there was a way for consumers to “sneak in” , the site would have no value for it's intended purpose. He and I discussed RapNet - and the fact ( he claimed) IDEX has surpassed Rap.
They’re going to be very careful not to allow the site to be cracked. But as we know, anything is possible.

Yes this is exactly the kind of story I was hoping for! Thank you and wow what a lovely story and ring!! I must be blinder than blind because that stone doesn’t look anywhere near I1 - it’s totally eyeclean! How lovely :D

Well, you and I wouldn't qualify for RapNet membership:

I understand why RapNet (and IDEX) have less demanding qualifications than, say, the Diamond Dealers Club of NY:

But unless IDEX does more vetting than their very basic forms suggest, I can see, @Rockdiamond , why HDer thinks it's loosey-goosey.

Here's the basic form (on a non-secure page, eep)
and here's the "subscription form" to be faxed in by those joining the Guaranteed Diamond Transactions (tm) network:

I guess we’ll see!!
The gentleman I spoke with mentioned that the first bar to pass is JBT. If a company is not listed there they’ll face a lot of scrutiny - according to the gentleman
