Good morning from the big red country that is Oz! Thanks for your help so far to these forums - the breadth and depth of knowledge here is astounding. Having come from a base of nearly zero, to now being able to at least hold my own in a discussion at shop jewelers is nothing short of a miracle - thanks for the great info!

I'm on the market for a diamond for my fiancee - yes I have it around the wrong way, in that I proposed but wanted to choose the diamond/ring together. We spent a great night on JA and a few other sites shopping our way around finding what we wanted. Basically we've put a few rings on and found that what she likes the best is bigger - around the 1.6 carat and our budget for a diamond is circa $13,000 US - happy to go up or down (preferably down :) ) a little for the right diamond.

We found 3 diamonds on JA and also sourced the GIA report for a couple of diamonds from a local bricks and mortar store here in Australia. We'd like to get your expert advice please :)

Apologies in advance however - it looks like I will need to put this over 2 posts to overcome the upload limit of 4 attachments. I'll keep the idealscopes/JA post in this, and bricks and mortar in the other.

JA:

186650
This diamond received the best rating from the JA gemologist, who liked "beautiful fire, brilliance, and scintillation and possesses a true "G" color that gets a slight boost from its faint fluorescence. Additionally, the gemologist noted that this is a great SI1 that faces eye clean."

170718
The gemologist rated this diamond "is also very bright and should also appear eye clean to the unaided eye. Lastly, it has a true "H" color that appears white."

We got a 3rd diamond analysed however the gemologist advised that the inclusions were visible to the naked eye.

Local Shop:
We haven't yet seen the local shop diamonds as they need to order them in overseas, and they for whatever reason don't provide idealscopes (or at least the lady I spoke with was new - unsure). They also seem a little too good to be true - all fitting within my budget, they are also local currency priced and the quality seems comparable if not better than JA - so I'm not entirely sure how this can be the case.

Diamond #1
1.69 carat, D colour, SI1, with an excellent cut.

Diamond #2
1.71 carat, D color, SI1, with an ideal cut (the valuation report suggests a much higher price than my requirements and I'm yet to get this confirmed from the dealer)

Thank you for your advice and thoughts on this! Appreciate this post is a few chapters of War & Peace and thank any experts that take their time to digest and respond!! Of course if you have any other advice or recommendations, I'd welcome that as well too.

Cheers,
Giles

Part 2 for attachment limit ... apologies for separating them out however I couldn't think of any other way to do it.

Thanks again!

Re: Best $13K diamond for engagement? (Part 2)

It's too good to be true because it is EGL. Can't compare GIA pricing to EGL pricing directly.

They are also not as well cut as your JA options.

wellll, you know the rest... ::) here's a well cut H&A stone graded by AGS lab with the same color/clarity,notice the diference in price?

I vote for the G SI1 from James Allen since they also said it was the best. Certainly G color is nice! I'd rule the others out since they are EGL graded. They only seem cheaper because they are not what the report says they are.

Thanks Mr Moderator. :)

Appreciate the feedback so far... so the other diamonds could be okay however the certificate isn't from a reputable source and therefore some concern for the quality? I saw someone's post about a similar clarity/carat/colour which was nearly $10K more expensive - so I guess my concern of "too good to be true" is likely to be about right?

Thanks for everyone's thoughts so far. Keep them coming! :)

a BIG +1 for what DS said.

forget about stones that aren't ags or gia graded. those are meant for sellers to squeeze more out of unsuspecting customers.
