Hi all,

My husband purchased a beautiful 1.2ct princess cut diamond from Blue Nile 6 months ago and I love it! The only problem is, we have never gotten in set and it is now sitting in a cold, dark, lonely drawer being unappreciated.

We live in the middle east and we''re hoping to get my ring made in platinum. Firstly, platinum is very rarely used here and the one workshop who deals with platinum in this country has said they do not have the equipment to do micropaving. Secondly, I do not trust the jewellers here to create such an intricate design with such tiny diamonds.

We were hoping to get the diamond set when we were back home in Australia over Christmas, but we did not have enough time.

Now we are considering our options and we feel our best bet is to deal with a jeweller in London and get the diamond set when we go over there during Easter.

The design I am looking for is the only one I have seen quite like this and the store where I originally saw it quoted us $15,000 for the setting alone (keep in mind they are the most expensive and prestigious jewellers in Australia)! What I loved most about this was that the band was very thin (2mm) and matched perfectly my knife edge Tiffany wedding band (in terms of width and shape) and did not overpower or hide it (as ALL of the knife edge rings that I have seen with micropave diamonds did)

I have attached a photo of a ring (by the same jeweller) that the design was based on. However my ring will be with a princess cut diamond and will not have the rose gold work on the collet. The diamonds used in the micropave for this ring are tiny (I recall the jeweller saying they were approx 0.02ct or 2 points each).

Please help me find a reputable jeweller in London who would be able to make this ring and who wont charge me anything like $15,000!

All help appreciated.

Do you want a regular shop, or would you be happy to use online?

I know they are not London based, but Brian Gavin Diamonds gets raves on here and is very reasonably priced. He is based in the USA and plenty of UK people on these boards have used him for settings without issue. He gets so much UK business that he even has a UK based number to call him on. If I was going custom again I would use him, rather than my UK jeweller.

Check out the BGD thread on SMTR to see his work.

ditto to BGD and also WF custom designs. Have a look in the search engine and type in WF or Whiteflash custom, or BGD or look in the smtr folder, the e-ring sticky on top, you will see so many rings. Leon Menge also does fantastic custom work, particullarly pave. Again look in the search function and try various search words to pull up custom pieces. Just bear in mind, CAD''s are (Computer Aided Designs) are typicially much bulkier than the final piece, so dont get scared off when you see the early stages of going custom.

As an aussie, I have gone with US pricescope vendors and wouldnt go any other way. Having lived in the UK, I found going custom will not be cheap (at least not at anyone decent).

I am in the process of doing a custom piece right at this moment with WF. Again, browse at all the beautiful rings and see what styles you like and who made them.

good luck

Hi,

You could try Holt in Hatton Garden. When we were shopping around they quoted us the most reasonable price (although OH asked them for thier best price, if he paid there and then). They seem quite friendly and apparantly have an excellent reputation.

I think they specialise in coloured stones, and custom jewellery.

Good luck,

Manisha

Thanks for your advice! No, it doesn''t have to be an actual store and online store is fine. I would only be worried about the possibility of them switiching my diamond and having no idea. Probably a very unlikely reality.

Leon and Brian Gavin''s work is fantastic, hopefully their quotes will be within our budget!

Any other recommendations for online jewellers with good pave work?

Mandie :)

I''d also suggest Brian Gavin for your project. Hopefully the quote will make your budget.
