Be CAREFUL With That Tesla

I'd say that if you are limping at 45 mph (implying that there is no possible way you can/should go any faster) that does not mean you're cruising at 55!

As for my reference to a Prius as an econobox I still stand by it. An econobox is generally described as a small, boxy, fuel-efficient car with few luxuries and a low sticker price. That's exactly what a Prius is. Ever since its inception it's been touted as a small, fuel-efficient, not many frills, affordable car. And when you compare it to a car like the Tesla, they really are worlds apart.

Being careful and taking care of your car as your are required to should be implicit to everyone alive. But there is a much bigger issue in this story. A reporter (a person that we count on to tell the facts) had gone far and above simply overlooking a few minor details, and instead did everything in his power to bring about a negative result. It's akin to taking a brand new car for a test, putting sugar in the tank, driving it around on empty, and then saying that the car wouldn't perform.

And yes, any car that can stand up to a BMW M5 and get to 60 in such a short amount of time (especially given its size) is an ultra-high performance car.

I'm leaving it there, dear. The chip on your shoulder is making this conversation increasingly unpleasant.

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Enjoy your car. . .

Don't know much about the Tesla, but it seems its early adopters are BIG FANS ;) I don't normally see this much vehemence from the people defending their favorite diamond vendor!

For the record, I think alternatives to petroleum are a great idea. I think that in most parts of the country, the Tesla is actually a coal-burning car cleverly disguised as an alternative energy powered vehicle, and that it's pretty dodgy to say it can replace 100% of the functions of an average gas-powered vehicle. It's a very cool, very expensive commuter car in the few areas where you can recharge or service it. But hey, I like expensive rocks, so if that's your thing, go for it! Take lots of pics and write reviews, I'll read 'em! :appl:

Haha, cm366, I'll be glad to oblige you shortly!

As far as the bolded part above...I know many Tesla owners (including myself) who will be installing or have already installed solar panels to charge the car. (Elon's made it incredibly convenient through SolarCity, after all! ;) Though my hubs will be doing our installation in the next 1-2 years.)

I think part of the vehemence stems from the fact that the pushback from the big three/oil companies has been SO HARD that it feels like David vs. Goliath in the electric car market and one bad bit of press (even falsified press!) can do LOADS of damage to a company's prospects. You have to be a bit feisty and quick to defend 'round these parts! 8-) :D

vc10um: Thank you for the invite, but unfortunately I am a good 6 hours away from SE MI. It's too bad because I really would like to check this car out up close. To be honest, I have yet to convince myself that I would buy one of these if I had the chance for two main reasons. First, I just can't imagine driving without hearing a nice exhaust note. To me, the right exhaust is simply music to my ears and that's what makes spring-time drives with the windows down so special. And second, I am not a big fan of touch screens in a car (one reason why I adore the Panamera ... if you want to turn something on, you can feel it with you finger without having to look at a screen and pretend like you're finger painting). BTW my car is no better, though I think the Tesla does use a touchscreen for just about everything. But surprisingly with that said, every time I see one of these cars on the road I instantly want to pull up and enjoy its presence a bit. It's a gorgeous car when sitting still or moving at speed. It's acceleration at highway speeds also caught me off guard. All-in-all, I think Tesla is on the right track and wish the all the luck in the world.

iLander: I am unsure what you're particularly offended of or how my car fits into this discussion. But if it will make you feel any better, you can call my car a gas guzzler.

About ten years ago, I had a chance to drive a Honda EV Plus (an all-electric hatchback) pretty regularly. It was designed as a niche or second car, not an only car. Basically three of us drove it off and on for several months. One thing I learned - the range on an electric car is very much tied to how you drive it. Our most spirited driver driver got about half the range of our most conservative driver. (I was the one right in the middle! :twirl: ) The other thing I learned is that an electric car is a blast to drive - although a lot of the advantages (awesome smooth acceleration, quiet operation etc.) are now also available with a lot of hybrid cars.

Vc10um - enjoy your new car! In all likelihood there will be some new model glitches... I hope Tesla takes good care of you when they show up.
