Basket or low set 6 prong solitares for large (11mm) stone?

Looking for suggestions for a "stock" (not sure if that's possible with an 11mm stone) setting with the following:

6 or even better, 8 prongs
low set, basket would be lovely
not all too delicate
MUST be able to have a band sit nearly flush

Ideas? I know a large stone cannot be set toooo low simply because of the size but I'm looking for styles that look like they're low and "squatty" even if they're not really that low.

Thanks so much!

Are you thinking of something like the 8 prong setting that Whiteflash does for studs?

If so, maybe they could do this for you as a ring without too much modification, and therefore not as expensive as *custom* custom.

(Sorry--for some reason I can't get this post as a pic, but here is the link: http://www.whiteflash.com/diamond-earrings/8-prong-martini-diamond-earrings-1548.htm)

This is an excellent idea I hadn't thought of...

Thanks!

11 mm is big. Is it a diamond or another stone?

ETA: And shame on me if you have an 11 mm diamond and I don't know about it! :cheeky:

If I had an 11mm round stone, from your list of wants, I would personally eliminate the need for a flush e-ring and wb. I feel like with such a large stone, if the basket starts out small enough at the base to allow a flush set, the flare up to 1mm will be so steep that the mount would be either really high or else wobbly N-S. I would personally want a basket with a nice open base, like the old style "crown" settings that Single Stone makes.

Re: Basket or low set 6 prong solitares for large (11mm) sto

here are some stock 11mm rings.. don't know if you're looking for this style or not, but I found these when I was searching for a temp for my stone. http://www.jansjewells.com/category.php?category_id=268

and.. is this 11mm a diamond? where is the SMTB thread!

ETA: Hm I thought this one would be there but it isn't… I wonder if this one http://www.jansjewells.com/item.php?item_id=2447&category_id=270 is also available for 11mm? It is avail for 10 and also 12?

I see what you're saying but....

-I'd like a WB to wear alone because a stone of this size won't be appropriate in many work situations. The whole notched/curved/etc option is out due to this.

-other option is a gap. or a spacer. Both of which I'm not a fan of in photos... BUT I've never tried in real life.

Can you link what you mean about "crown" setting from Single Stone?

[I'll admit I love looking at loose stones but hate the setting search... :-/ ]

Diamond. But I'm pleading the 5th on details. Maybe in a few weeks.

To be honest... I am loving some of the options by Leon Mege but I'm A) not a patient person, and B) have seen so many horror stories on here that I'm leery to use.

He does some lovely baskets that taper down to nearly no "base" so a flush WB seems like it might work.

Miss P, you do realize it's cruel and unusual punishment to hold out on us like this?

But I respect your desire to keep the PS hounds at bay (as much as it is sheer torture for us) and eagerly await this *reveal*. :halo:

FYI... Whiteflash will no longer do any custom work with owner supplied stones :-/

Re: Basket or low set 6 prong solitares for large (11mm) sto

From what I'm gathering most any basket is considered custom with this size... Still looking...

I really like the BGD baskets and the BostonJeff look

They will, but they require appraisals and proof of insurance.
They just set my OECs into custom stud settings earlier this month, they aren't near 11mm though 8)

Interesting. They mentioned none of this. I said that I thought I'd seen WF custom pieces on Pricescope and they just said that it might be true but that they've recently had a change in policy. It is somewhat off putting that they would completely dismiss my inquiry if they are making exceptions to their "policy" like your studs.

Hmm.

If you lik the Boston Jeff look-maybe try Adam at Old World Diamonds. His bench created Just Ginger's ring-its huge and stunning!

I know-- you are correct... STUNNING!

What about James Allen's Timeless ring?

They don't do "policy exceptions", I would know because I've asked about one or two! They did have a recent policy change and now have much stricter requirements regarding what they will and will not accept: stones must be in certain condition, you must provide proof of insurance and detailed appraisals if no GIA or AGSL report, there are (not insignificant) outside stone setting fees, and I believe they will not set non-papered coloured stones at all any more (don't quote me on that).

If you're interested in pursuing something with them I'd suggest calling in and asking to speak to Vera - she is wonderfully helpful and can provide more clarity.

BUMP* Miss P, did you get your ring yet??  I'm in need of gawking at others' sparklies to get distracted from my own empty hand.
