Bait and Switch 5 carat diamond need advice

It is very possible EGL missed detection of the GIA inscription. They may not have even looked for one or they may have found it and the owner of the diamond told them to leave it off the report. The diamond owner at the time might have intended to remove the inscription after the report was issued and forgot to follow through. It would have likely pleased the diamond owner if EGL had been 2 or more grades higher instead of 1 grade higher than GIA. That was the game at the time. It is, thankfully, not a common practice these days by major labs, but it is not completely over, either. Can you imagine how many older off graded documents are in circulation? People need to keep up their guard.

As far as the quality of the "deal" you made some years ago, it is impossible to tell you how you did. You should have known how you were doing at the time BEFORE you agreed to the trade-in and new stone. Analyzing long past trade-ins of diamonds is something nearly impossible to review properly. We don't know the condition of the trade-in, or the exactness of the grading. It is very difficult for any consumer to do a good trade-in, but sometimes it works out in a way that everyone is happy at the time of the deal. Going back to revisit a long done deal is truly a wasted bit of extra anxiety and not of any current value to anyone. You have a decent and quite large diamond which many here would love to own. Enjoy it and consider the pros and cons of recutting. You can do a minor improvement such as Garry Holloway suggested or a major refashioning with a somewhat finer outcome and more weight loss.

The question for many people is "Will you appreciate the nuances of the major recut job over the slightly reduced improvements but added retained size of the minor recut job?" How you feel about it depends on your experience, your eyes, and you personal attitude about perfection of cut over other important considerations.

Hi Yssie, what I mean by more fire, is better light performance. I would want better cut proportions. There’s not enough light return.

Here’s my recommendation:

When the world reopens, visit your local Jared and ask to see some large Hearts on Fire diamonds. As large as they’ve got on hand. I think you should see some “very well cut” stones in-person before committing to a risky and pricey recut.

Your stone‘s proportions - by either report - aren’t dreadful. They don’t scream “dull and dreary”. Let’s make sure the difference is worth it to you.

Re. Your trade in - most of us are avoiding that topic for the reasons @oldminer stated. Do come to PS before choosing a recut or another stone though, we love to help ::)

Does Jared sell Hearts on Fire diamonds? I've never stepped foot in a Jared, but when I check the store locator on the Hearts on Fire diamond website I don't see any Jared stores listed.

Old Miner, were you saying that major labs -besides- EGL were inflating color grades at any point? I thought that GIA has been uniformly strict throughout the years but are you suggesting they have not been? Just curious.

No endemic major problems with many majors such as GIA, AGSL, HRD, GCAL, GSI, PGS. IGI on an international basis has a ton of customers and a very good reputation. The IGI- USA operation is highly capable, too and gotten better and better in recent years. There are many very skilled and serious small diamond grading labs which do their very best to mirror GIA results, too.

EGL and a few other three initial named labs sometimes hit the right grades and sometimes seem soft. The older reports are the weak ones, not the newest ones. EGL really had a major problem and has taken many steps in a positive direction. It is the inconsistency of some problematic minor labs being unable to closely mirror GIA grading and not saying so. Uninformed consumers may believe every lab with three letters is the same as GIA. That is not the case.

Strange story.
GIA assuring someone of EGL's work??
I would not put leaving off an inscription as even "unlikely".
At a certain point in time EGL was soooo very bad, they'd almost do anything.
Which is why GIA stating they are not the same stone ( without a physical inspection) is, imo, out of line.

There was a high percentage of larger J/SI2's that got sent to EGL back in the day.....a lot of dealers went "grade shopping" believing the consumer would never find out.

You're right. And John actually texted me the same. I think I was thinking about Peerless. But I'm not entirely sure.
Facepalm.

I’m so new here that I didn’t realize there was a page 2. Lol
I want to thank everyone so very much for all the information and advice. It’s been very much appreciated.
