I was a little intimidated at first about going in Tiffany''s. The first time, I only looked in the cases and did not ask to try anything on. The second time, I had another PS''er with me, so I had more nerve to ask. And the salesperson was very nice and let me try on rings. Once I really thought about it, I doubt the average salesclerk in a jewelry store makes as much as I do, so I decided I didn''t need to worry about what they think. I do not dress up to go jewelry shopping to impress a salesperson or anyone else. I can honestly say that I got good service everywhere I looked at settings. But there was a definite difference in those who were very sales oriented (as in pushing what was expensive) and those who took the time to show me differences in quality. At least now I know who I''d trust to buy from in the future for other jewelry besides diamonds.

I too, have gotten really bad service at Bailey, Banks and Biddle. Bad, bad service in Michigan where they practically shoved the diamond that they wanted my guy to buy THAT day. I mean come on...don''t be that pushy.

Another weird story at Baileys in Louisana (these are all pre-PS), I had decided I wanted a Tacori setting and then the sales people there tried to push my guy and me into buying seriously, the ugliest princess cut diamond (it was rectangular and dead!) ever. When I backed out of the Tacori setting, getting the deposit back was a huge hassle.

So, that jewelry store doesn''t get my business at all anymore.

I just bought a new car this summer...had to have one because my piece of junk Jeep kept breaking down on me even though it wasn''t that old. It was fully paid off, but because I''m so young the majority of the car dealerships we went to paid NO attention to me or wouldn''t let me test drive any cars! Finally, my fiance knew the service manager at the big Toyota dealership in town and he got the general sales manager to take care of me. A few hours later, I drove off the lot with a brand new Toyota Solara.

It was great since he actually paid attention to me and listened to what I wanted and actually let me test drive a car!

What''s weird is I''ve always got really good service at Tiffany''s but not at mall jewelry stores.

when I went in to tiffany''s I was doing a major scan of the place and zeroed in on the lucida case and decided before I even held one that it wasn''t going to do what mine did but the case over had three big rounds, I asked to see the middle one, I think it was about 2.5 but I forget now, and she said to go in this room and I did and I took mine out and held them side by side and rocked them back and forth and compared the scintilation. The lights were *awesome* and made my diamond soooo gorgeous LOL Sure, the tiffany was beautiful too. But they had equal scint but the tiffany had very uniform scint where mine is a jumbled combination of teeny tiny sparkles, small, med, large, and mondolarge flares of color. Equal number of booms hitting my eye but my stone was diverse and the tiffany stone was like... it was like having a handful of peagravel splashing in water where mine is like a handful of mixed peagravel and sand and rocks and bigger stones. I was dressed VERY casually and she looked a little snotty to me, but I was pretty insistant and ignored the fluff. Later I thought I should have taken out the lucida for kicks but I could tell in the case that it was pretty but not gonna do what I wanted.

Tiffany''s has always acted pretty snooty, but if I directly asked them for help, they''ve always done it. Never avoided me if I was clearly trying to get their attention. I dunno, my uncle is really rich. I think rich people like what we consider to be "snooty" attitude from the salespeople as long as they are responsive when asked. Gives off an air of wealth to a store I guess.

Hmmm Codex you may be right. Maybe they think the snooty attitude makes the store seem exclusive?

Although the sales people at Tiffany''s were very nice to me. But I was focused on the diamonds, not them. Still I would have picked up on a really snooty attitude, like I did at the small jewelry store.

I really do think it''s the salesperson you happen to come across. I''ve been to Tiffany several times with my bf, once we were given great service; another time, we were completely ignored. No one even acknowledged our presence.

Then one day, I decide to go into Tiffany alone after dropping my bracelet off for a polishing. The sales guy in the engagement ring section was great. He kept pulling out random stuff for me to try on, and when I asked to look at a Lucida, he pulled out three different styles for me to compare the difference the setting makes for the stone. I was surprised. Here I was, a relatively young, single girl, wearing jeans and a hoodie, and he was being extremely helpful. I louped the Lucida and noted the arrows in the stone, and he asked if I was a GIA gemologist or something! I laughed and said no, gems are a hobby. Then he tried talking me into trying on a pink diamond, 1.5 carats, I think; and this gorgeous asscher cut blue-gray diamond. I didn''t dare to; I was afraid I would break them.

Point of story: that sales guy was great. He loved showing what the store had to offer, and he didn''t care that I couldn''t afford most of what he showed me. I kept telling him: it''s too much, I can''t afford it; and he would wave at me and say, one day you will. Find out what you like and come back when you have the money.

I left with his business card. If my bf ever decides he wants to get me anything from Tiffany in the future, I''m calling this guy up and making an appointment.

I really wish that CEOs of companies like BBB would read this site to know what a negative impact their snotty salespeople have on business. I hate BBB. They''ve always been rude to me; regardless of how I dress or how much jewelry I wear (which isn''t much, since I don''t have much.)

Ok, rant over.

Hahaha I just had a thought and had to laugh at myself. I am reading a lot of people talking about how they were ignored or treated badly and I think I even posted one of my expieriences. I am young. I have piercings and tattoos and i''ve been ''dressed down'' before in a jewelry store and been ignored. Especially when i''ve been in the higher end ones. I''ve had that expeirience where I walk in and the sales people give me that look like, what is SHE doing in here, and go above and beyond to ignore me.
And that will make me complain to no end.

BUT i''ve also been in mall stores where I walk in and the second my foot crosses the threshold a sales person is up in my face asking what they can help me with. I''ve told them i''m just looking but they will continue to follow me around asking "what I have in mind" with the key to the case at the ready.
And that also makes me complain to no end.

I''m just darn hard to please then aren''t I? hahahaha

Eye contact and a genuine smile can work *wonders* :)

i have "my" salespeople. houston texas. these are people who have worked at builidng a relationship with me. i walk in and hover til they are free.

asian lady, bailey banks and biddle - where town and country mall used to be.

ben bridge galleria, man with blue fluorescent pinkie ring diamond.

mei mei, helzberg

bailey banks and biddle, houston galleria, the older lady

Mrs gupta, foleys, west oaks mall

see loyalty goes both ways. one thing that salespeople forget is that people (me) buy after scouting, planning and thinking about it. so the first ten times i look at it, i don't buy, but i am saving or "plotting"

there is a ring at helzberg a marquise pave cluster in 18 k white gold to die for, but i have to plan. I can't just drop 3k spontaneously. i like helzberg layaway. i tend to do one layaway per academic year.

I also want a very small mikimoto pearl studs to go with my sapphire jackets.
