baguettes old fashioned?

I used to love baguettes and thought that I wanted them on my ering. After a couple of months I realized I might not like them as much as I thought.

For some reason my family and friends thought they were sortof "old fashioned" or 80''s. I think they look pretty classic, but then again I don''t know much about that.

Just wondering what you all think.

I think it depends on the setting....I love baguettes with a round solitaire or an EC, Princess etc set either side of the diamond, to me that is a classic look ( like the HW Ducktail setting) but apart from that it depends on the ring really. I don''t like too many of them in chunky jewellery, used with simplicity is my preference.
 
This is just my opinion!! I have a couple of old rings with baguettes that I bought in the mid 90''s and I absolutely hate them now.... I have found that tastes have changed throughout the years but I never can see myself buying another baguette again!

Baguette sidestones are quite some classic - I doubt anyone can call them 'passe'. Eternity bands with baguettes are very much live and kicking too... IMO, it doesn't look like the world will remain void of baguette cut diamonds any time soon. Somethins like THIS doesn't need any explanation. Trendy art deco-style rings also accomodate baguettes (square?) very well - the style could not be more un-80-ish!

A myriad of tiny baguettes fanning around a mound-like ring (case in point) ... perhaps this is what folks are talking about.

Anyway, you shold be able to get and wear whichever style you like, regardless.
 
Not really keen on them myself. They are not really that good for light return.

But at the end of the day, its personal preference.

I think baguettes defenetly passed the test of time...
They are classic, and they can be used in presision ways to design jewelry or watches in a way no other shapes can.

Dont forget the art-deco period, some of the finest pieces of jewelry containing baguettes or other geometric step-cut shaped diamonds were used...
 
Well, my personal opinion is that the style of baguettes that was popular in the 80''s is pretty dated looking -- they were usually set in yellow gold, and swirled all over in elaborate patterns. Very busy-looking. However, the 3-stone look where there is just one tapered baguette on each side of a center stone is timeless, especially when set in platinum (again, just my opinion....this could look just as nice in YG but I think when set in plat it is a very classic style).
 
I think, as Ana showed examples of, baggs can look timeless and elegant (that eternity band even has a modern feel to me). I don''t particularly like them myself but that doesn''t mean I don''t think they look beautiful in the design of other people''s rings. Just a personal thing.
 
I find the '80s look comments funny because my grandmother has baguettes that she got back in the 1930s and it still looks classic an beautiful with her 2 carat round in platinum.

I love, love, love her ring and will get it one day. Out of date, NO WAY. My best friend has a ring very similar to my grandma's that her husband gave her 4 years ago when they got engagaged . I think its a classic.

edited to add, the look I'm referring to is one baguette set on each side of a center stone.
 
I absolutely love baguettes, I really think they are one of the most classic and elegant looking shapes. I really love the settings with tapering baguettes on the sides, like the one Virginia posted.

My 3ct is set w/ a tapered baguette on either side. It''s a classic style that will come in and out of favor. Some like it. Some don''t. The design has been around since the turn of the century or before.

I DO remember the rings of the 1980''s. I DO NOT remember baguettes, as side stones, being popular. What I remember were all these swirl rings with little diamonds of any shape (the really big ones mixed all kinds of shapes in one design

) going around and around. I''ve often wondered if that was indeed the "style" or a reaction to the near unattainable price aspect of larger (not specs of carbon) diamonds in the late 70''s/early 80''s.

In the end, find a "style" that YOU like. Not a "style" just because it''s in "style" because on any given Sunday - that "style" will be out of "style".
 
I have two settings with baguettes...one that tapered with two on each side (marquise center with platinum/yellow gold setting) and now the new setting with one baguette one round on each side with marquise center. I love the classic look of the one baguette tapering on each side with the round center...to me that will never go out of style. The reason I changed my original setting had more to do with the flow with the marquise center and also the awful yellow gold on the setting. Had the yellow gold not been there I probably would have just kept that setting. They are not great for light return but my new setting looks wonderful with the RBs added...that really helps bounce light off the baguettes and the marquise (neither great for light return so the rbs help immensley). I think it''s a personal preference but I think there are some very timeless, classic setting with baguettes out there

Baguettes will always be classic! I just love tapered baguettes with a RB center.

If you are looking for a twist, then look into using tapered bullets instead.

my ring is in my apartment and Iam not worried AT ALL! I got the signed pieces setting that I LOVED and a beautiful diamond from wf.

I originally wanted baguettes and then thought no, so i was just wondering!!
 
I think baguettes are classy, especially vertically in an eternity band like RedRaider posted.

I have baguettes with my EC and love it! It''s simple and classic....

I agree with what others have said...it''s going to depend on the setting itself.
 
Bullet shaped or even shield shapes can replace a tapered baguette, though they might be more trendy. A classic tapered bag is great with most center stones as long as the proportion and quality are in sync with the center. I think they are timeless, elegant...not daring or innovative but will stand the test of time. I also remember 80''s stuff as more "busy" almost like cocktail rings...
 
Baguettes are beautiful, but I agree, there isn''t as much light return or BLING as round cut stones. I have a three stone ruby ring (Ruby, oval center stone and two trapezoid baguettes) and the diamonds don''t really sparkle much.
 
To me the combination of a round or emerald cut center stone with baguettes on either side will always be classic -my mother has a beautiful EC center stone with baguettes and it has always been one of my favorite settings. A friend of mine just got her princess cut diamond reset with baguettes and it looks beautiful - I''m not a big fan of princess cut stones but I think the baguettes compliment it beautifully. I love how baguettes draw the eye towards the center of the ring, making the center stone the focal point.
 
I would not pick out a ring based solely on what is the trend today. Trends tend to ebb and flow with time. Go with what you feel is the nicest ring today and you might hate it tomorrow. Go with something you will love no matter what the trends are doing. After all, hopefully you''ll be wearing this ring for years and years and trends will come in and out of style many times during those years.
P.S. I tend to like the look more than a pave band.

It''s amazing how I miss threads; I was tempted around the same time this thread came out to ask a similar question, but didn''t, totally missed this, and came across it accidentally today.

I agree with most of what was said, particularly:

The last point make me think of one reason I like them, despite their not being as sparkly as rounds etc. : If you like the clean, classic simplicity of solitaire, but want it to be a little more interesting, baguettes just add a little zing while still being simple.

The reason I was originally going to post a thread similar to this was that I tried on a friend''s ring, which is a classic RB flanked by tapered baguettes, plus it had fishtail prongs. The ring was from the 1950''s, but could also have been older. I asked my DH what he thought, and he said, "it''s okay." And I said, "Just ok?" and he said, "it''s kind of modern."

!! I think when he sees any kind of step cuts, he thinks modern. BTW, modern in our lexicon here is not good. Both he and I like more classic, timeless, traditional styles. Or antique-looking.
 
There''s another thread on this too...but I had said I am not a fan of baguettes with the RB look. I know that it IS classic but sometimes it just seems like older women do wear them more than young gals. But I know that''s probably not true. I do think they are old-fashioned-ish, they kind of remind me of grandma, BUT I know they are a classic style (it''s a HW staple, how can it not be classic?) and that lots of people wear them, will wear them and continue to wear them! So I would say just get what makes YOU happy and who cares what others think, none of us are wearing the ring, you are!!!!
