OK...so our kitchen is coming along...it's not a huge work area e/t the actual kitchen is big.
Here are the cabinets....they are coming out a little "girly" but the appliances and hardware and lighting is more modern and clean....

I like modern but not too modern. I guess transitional....

I was going to do this cool linen look subway tile....it has beige, gray and brown threads....

The countertop is a dark brown Okite...which is just a solid with some SOME dark veining

But then I saw the Sumi-e mosaics for the backsplash instead. Hmmmm.

Any thoughts?

I know what Sumi-e is, but I have never heard of it in reference to tiles, do you have a pic or a link we could see?

Hi Brazen! That mosaic is the Sumi...Yes, I think Sumi-e is a traditional type of Japanese painting maybe...This is just tile though :)
 
I lilke the subway tile but to keep it looking "clean" I wouldn't use the mosaics.
 
Sorry- no, either or. Either the mosaics OR the subway!

I'm so torn! The mosaic also does comes in a mini subway...

The mosaic is also $20 more a square foot....

Keep in mind that the countertop of a dark, rich chocolate brown and the floors are dark brown hardwood!

This is so not as much fun as I hoped

Also, for a more transitional feel, can I just stack the linen look subway tile (if I pick that as the backsplash)....? and not stagger it like traditional subway?
 
Yeah, the subway tile if it''s a light color (can''t quite make out the color of the subway tile) Do you have a link to the color?
 
You probably can stack, but why would you? It probably adds interest to the backsplash to not stack.

No, I don''t remember the manufacturer...it''s a little darker than the cream cabinets...but the cabinets have dark brown distressing...The subway has cream in the background....
 
Only b/c I''ve seen it stacked for a modern look...I''ll try to find a pic...
 
Have you thought of using the mosaics as a little trim with the subway tile like around the edges or as a border near the stove? Then maybe you could stack the subway tiles so it''s not too busy?

Your kitchen looks like it is coming along nicely. I love your cabinets- they sound like what I am looking for.. cream with brown distressing

Do you mind me asking who they are made by ? I love the Mosiac tiles...sorry . Can you shop around for better pricing ?

Thanks so much...they are just Kraftmaid cabinets in Vanilla Bean glaze. I did some research and just was like, whatever, just go with them since the kitchen place either used them or too expensive custom....Home depot has them but I wanted more of a personal accountability thing....The tiles aren''t at home depot and I don''t think they can get them

I just wonder if the mosaic is too "much" for the small space with the dark counter...Hmmm. Thanks again!
 
Hmmm. I kinda think the modern grid pattern of the mosaic would be too stark with the raised panel. I prefer the linen-look subway tiles. Did see a recent subway tile application that ran the tiles vertically, rather than the traditional horizontal. Looked kinda fresh but that was in a bathroom -- not sure if it would work as a backsplash (not as much room to show off the pattern & have your eye get a handle on it yanno?)

Have you checked out the tiles that look like beaded board (or "bead board")? Or the ones that are pressed like old tin ceilings? Might take the whole thing to a more cottage feel but that might not be what you''re going for. (I think its Ann Sacks who does those but more have probably knocked it off by now).
 
Vanilla Bean... lol that is what I picked out... I had a feeling from your description that is what is was. Home Depot has this thing where they submit your job for a "bid" .. it has to be over a certain amount of money

Our sa did that for us, and the estimate came down a few thousand !! Are you happy with them so far ? We going to do the corner cabinet in glass too...

Thanks! I think I love the mosaic in a vacuum...know what I mean? But I''m just not sure they will work with the space...So I hear ya...Yeah, definitely don''t want to go cottage...I have seen the vertical look which is cool...I just don''t know how brace I am!

The hardware is modern as are the appliances, faucet and lighting...so maybe that wil be enough for me...and the Sumi will end up in a bathroom...Hmmm.

Yup, good ol Vanilla Bean...not too beige, not too white...they look fine to me so far but have only been in for a few days!...I have read stuff about peeling, etc etc...but whatever. I just went for it. I think my NY Home Depot experiences turned me off. They are all miserable and uneducated. Here in NC there is a huge difference....but I still was unsure....Glad you're saving a bundle! Good luck!

I''m dying to pair a stripe of similar glass mosaic tile WITH plain white glossy subway tile in our upstairs shower. Sadly other projects are coming first! I''m intriqued by the smaller glass SUBWAY tiles -- I think that would be cool. I''m not keen on stacking though -- that always reminds me of cinderblock walls or prisons or something.

Have you thought of using the subway tiles as the main backsplash and the mosaics in a square pattern above the cooktop? You could even frame them out with a raised tile that coordinates with the subway tiles. BTW, I love the linen subway tiles. I have plain tan in the kitchen, but, I love your textured ones! What will your wall color be? I''m finding mine to be a bit to boring with a tan backsplash and tan walls. I really wish I''d have done a green backsplash...Or even chocolate. Just a little something to think about.

Oh, hi, Miranda! The walls are a pale pale gray beige. I'm boring LOL..but don't forget that the wood floors are really dark and the countertop is a very squared off shape and chocolate color for punch. The furniture is also very dark...Thanks again!
 
Oh, beieve it or not, these are the same cabinets in a diff color. These are walker zanger tiles ...really pretty but I think you need a big space....

I do think think the mosaics are pretty, but I still like the linen subway tiles. You can always jazz it up with accessories. lol, I thought when you were talking about stacking the subway tiles, you meant lining up the grout lines. If stacked means applying them vertically, I''m not a fan. Maybe the mosaics can find their way to your bathroom
