Home Baby Food Making Moms

LOL ah-ha! I should start throwing around all of these unique veggie names when talking to DH. Maybe he''d eat them more if they had different names?

courgette, corriander, basil, aubergine...

You could make him a lovely grilled salad.

did I mention I love the Beaba?
I''m so glad I got it! LOVE IT!.
I still don''t think I would pay full price...but DEFINITELY recommend buying a used one!

Made green beans yesterday in a snap!

Questions...

- When did you guys introduce meats (chicken, turkey, etc)
- When did you introduce yogurt? did you go for plain whole milk organic?. The baby yogurts seem full of sugar to me. I think plain with fruit may be yummy!
- When did you introduce lentils, white beans, etc?
- Do you make your own oatmeal?. I want to start. Not sure if I should grind the oats before or just leave them a little chunky and puree them a little before serving?
- When did you start finger foods? any easy ''carry with you'' treats that are NOT puffs for 7-8 month babies?. I''m not a fan of promoting snacking and will avoid that (as well as the obsession of giving the babies puffs or cheerios all day long)...but sometimes when the babies are un-easy and I''m trying to have lunch or something, I want to have something healthy to offer them...

Suggestion...

- Have you guys tried quinoa?. Quinoa is the wonder grain, seriously. Full of protein and fiber. Much better than rice!. My little guys loved it!

mandy.. for the yogurt, i plan to just give him plain whole fat fage to start... maybe with a little bit of fruit mixed in. it''s too bad we can''t give the bebe''s honey because that would be yummy!

for oatmeal, can you do the steel cut and puree it? that seems like it would be ideal if possible. and you go girl making your own!! i am just hoping to be able to give him some homemade stuff!

i was considering the beaba but my friend said she just got a few steamer baskets and put them in a big pot to steam lots of things at once. then she freezes and keep some fresh. as a working mom this sounds ideal. is anyone else freezing a fair amt? i think i am going to get the green sprouts containers and also the beaba tray to try out.

random note but one of the moms said something about the beaba tray being a great little feeding tray for them too because you can put things like yogurt, fruit, veggies, etc in each of the containers and let the kids start to learn about what they like.

annnddd one more Q for me... when do your LO"s start kind of wanting to feed themselves? i know J is not even on solids yet but just wondering when i can expect him to want to start feeding. and do any of you have the curvy spoons to help them find their mouths or is that not necessary? mom was asking.

For toddlers wanting to feed themselves: SAVORY PANCAKES! (This is actually an invention of mine)

1) I used to saute finely shredded veggies (carrots, zucchinni, or the tops of boccoli etc) with ground chicken or turkey.

2) Then I folded the sauteed mixture into buttermilk pancake mix, and added shredded cheese.

3) Cooked the pancakes, then cut them into little squares that my kids could pick up with their fingers.

This was so yummy, I had to keep my husband and babysitter from eating the kid''s meal!

I think a lot of babies start wanting to feed themselves as early as 6-9 months. As soon as their little fingers can pick up a cheerio, and they can shove it in the general direction of their mouth they''ll also start grabbing for the spoon.

I fed my kids things that they could grab by themselves as early as that. Even without a lot of teeth, babies can gum a lot of food. My kids didn''t like pureed food, so I cooked things really soft, and let them grab and eat by themselves. Here are some suggestions:

Soft bread with cream cheese, cut into tiny pieces
peas and carrots
potatoes or yams ( I cooked them kind of like scalloped potatoes, so it had milk and cheese too) and then cut them up in tiny pieces
Fish (my family has no history of allergies) so I introduced fish fairly early around 1 years old, and I picked tilapia, or salmon (stuff that''s easy to flake, and few bones)
Scrambled eggs
pancakes (like the savory ones I posted above, or just regular pancakes)
Soft cheese (gouda, or muenster)
pasta shells
