AVC Studs? Seeking opinions.

Hi all! I currently have a pair of 1ctw RB (Fs) studs, which are lovely, but came down with a bad case of AVR/AVC lust. I have seen AVR/AVCs in real life, adore the warmer colors, and figured I could gain a little size and a lot of character (love those chunky flashes) by trading my current studs in for a pair of AVR or AVCs.

I was trolling GOG this morning (as I do quite often) and spotted a brand new little .85K AVC, got on the phone with GOG, and ended up reserving the stone. Jon will have another stone cut to match within two months. But, as with any big purchase, I am second guessing myself and would like to hear what you think.

This is the new stone: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/7959/

My concerns are:
1) My old studs are 5.2mm each and round. I was hoping to gain a little size when trading in. Will there be any visual difference with this new 5.7mm stone? (as an aside, there is a .83 AVR at 5.9mm--just as a size comparison--so it doesn't sound like this cushion is facing up all that much smaller than a similarly sized round)
2) Are cushion studs as versatile as RB studs? I've never seen cushion studs in real life and am wondering whether I'll be as satisfied with this cut as I would an AVR. (I am planning to bezel these puppies when the set is complete)

All thoughts and advice welcome and appreciated!

Well, I recently bought a pair of the AV rounds (.60 each). I sort of felt like cushions on the ears would have to be turned the same way to look right and I just thought the rounds might be better for me. I think maybe MissDebby(?) or someone has AV cushion earrings and can speak to how she likes the cushions for earrings. My AV rounds are between 5.35-5.4mm and are smaller than my last round pair at 5.8mm. I felt like I'd wear the smaller pair more often because H&A 5.8mm stones were pretty blingy! Plus, I wanted the AV rounds to be able to go in jackets if I ever get any, and that was another reason for getting round and a little smaller. I'd love to have an AVC for a ring or pendant. But I guess I just personally preferred the rounds for earrings. I am sure the AVC's will make beautiful studs, though! And yes, they should look larger than your old ones.

Hi I have AVC studs

first a couple of pics: (.41/.42 J VS1 VS2)

The AVC are super beautiful and very gentle looking. Very soft. I love them but they aren't quite "flashy" enough for me and at some point I want to upgrade to whiter (G or higher) AVRs at about .60 or so.

Let me know if you have more questions. -Debs

Sorry, I don't have any helpful input - other than, Just Do It!
I've been drooling over AVCs recently and I really really want one.

If you get a pair of them I may must have to propose to you.
We'll dump our partners, and bling happily ever after.

Debby, I am glad you saw this post! I am not sure how the AVC's are in terms of showing color, but I just got I-J AVR's and they face up very white, much like regular ideal cut rounds! Otherwise, I wouldn't have kept them because I thought my limit was H color. I took the chance because they were a great match and the size I wanted, and I am glad I did. It might be that the cushions show more color but I haven't seen any to know for sure.

I will say that the cushions that have the same length sizes all around would be easier to use for earrings that those that are more rectanglar. So that won't be a problem for Ana either because I think hers was pretty square.

Debs, wouldn't AVCs be more flashy than AVRs of the same weight?
Like a moth near a flame, Kenny's been fluttering around GOG's site, watching AVR and AVC videos.
I'm torn between the two cuts for a possible future purchase.
I noticed that the maltese cross under the table of the AVCs is bolder than the petals in the flower under the table of the AVR.

Also, the AVC's maltese cross has 4 elements whereas the flower in the AVR has 8 elements.
That means, for the same carat weight, each part of the AVC cross is much larger than each petal of the AVR flower.

So I think if bold flash is your thing you should stick with AVCs, not AVRs.

Hey Kens!

In theory I think you'd be right, but maybe it's because they are J's, but they are gorgeous but quite subdued. Maybe it's just that I need bigger rocks :naughty:

Go-friend, you're right.
You need bigger rocks.

Hey, I noticed our local Bank has a guard change at 1 PM.
The first guard leaves at 1:00 sharp, even if the new guard is late . . .
Maybe you can I could . . . :Up_to_something: . . . . oh never mind.

I think AVCs would make beautiful earrings, but they are definitely not the same look as round brilliant studs. An obvious con would be that they face up smaller, so you don't get as much bang for your buck. But the AVCs sparkle like mad in a way that RBs just can't. Totally different kind of sparkle. OECs may be a good compromise. The sparkle of an antique stone but better face up than an AVC?

I don't mean to threadjack, but Debby would you mind letting me know who made the settings for your AVCs? Were they handmade for your AVCs or were you able to use stock basket settings? I'm looking into having a pair of OMC studs made for myself as we speak and I can't figure out what kind of settings will work. I want simple basket settings like yours (not martinis). Thanks!!

Just went today to pick out settings for mine. You can get stock settings for squarish cushions. Might have to have some made if they were an odd shape.

Just got stock settings from GOG. They took care of everything : )

Very good point about the AVCs needing to be turned the same way to look right! I didn't even think about that? Did you really find a big difference between the 5.4 and 5.8mm stones in "blingosity"? Thanks for the speedy response!

Missdebby- I love your studs and think they look perfect on you! I do see how the AVC might throw off a softer brilliance than the AVR. I might be remembering this incorrectly, but were you considering the flawless set of D AVRs a few weeks ago? I would love to see more shots of your earrings if possible!

Dear Kenny, I nearly choked on a sip of water while reading this and cackling. Nice to know that someone else shares my sick AVR/AVC lust and might even stalk new stones and videos as frequently as I. I would love to bling happily ever after in a sea of perfectly cut chunky cushions!

No, I don't think there is a lot of difference. The .60's are plenty big for me. If you held them side by side there would be a difference, but not so much once they are on. They are very bright like H&A stones. I just fell in love with the little AV OEC's. I've considered trading my ring diamond, but I do love my current stone. I just need to keep it, get an AVC and an AV round for my alternate e-rings! (I wish!!!!)

Yes, I was going to buy the D IF and the D Vs1, but had some issues with spending the money and pulled back. I'm trying to be a grownup and have a little self control

Ugh, that self-control thing is hard when you are a frequent PS visitor! :naughty:

totally, but I promised myself that I'd find a way to both be totally infatuated with bling but responsible. And also I'm focusing on being in love with what I have.

Three e-rings sounds like a fantastic idea to me! :naughty:

Thanks for all of the advice, everyone! I pulled the trigger on the AVC last night and it will be set into a very inexpensive basket pendant so I can wear it while waiting for the matching stone to be cut. It should be in my hands tomorrow! I am very curious to see it (and hold it up to my ear from every possible angle) and determine whether it will make a good earring.

Great idea to set it into a pendant for now! Can't wait to see it!

DS-Do you still have these studs? Did you post ear shots? I would love to see them!

No, I decided to go back to rb studs. Someone else ended up with those. I was used to G-H color in my studs and I decided I just preferred brighter stones than I-J, and I wanted larger than .60's. I'll look and see if I see them posted here. I'd still love a pair of AVR's to set in either bezels or leverbacks, though!

Actually, AnaSpark ended up with them. I am not sure if she still has them or if she upgraded, but here is her thread:

I still wish I had these if I could have justified two pair, though!
