Im thinking about buying from a wholesaler. At what point do i get an appraisal? I trust the guy, but then again, Id rather someone who is neutral to the deal appraise the stone. Can I have the stone appraised prior to purchase?

Beware of wholesalers, many bad stories here and usually when it is a "friend"

Anyhoo, I would get in writing from the seller that the sale is contingent on the appraisal coming back satisfactory for you, which typically would mean the diamond is what it is purported to be and perhaps meets your criteria for eye cleanliness etc. Then send it to an *independent* appaiser (PS has a list just do a search). If it passes, then its all good, if not then return the diamond.

The diamond will come with a cert right?

Make the deal so that you’ve got a period of 7-30 days when you can return the stone undamaged for a 100% refund for ANY reason, not just misgrading or even the results of an appraisal. Use that time to get it appraised by an independent appraiser of your own choosing, not one supplied by the seller. If the window is short, find your appraiser and set your appointment first, before you cement the deal. Many of us are pretty busy and it would be a shame to use up your time waiting for an appointment.
