Hello,

I'm looking to build an engagement ring, and I'm hoping someone can provide some guidance between two similarly prices 1.7(ish) carat stones on BN. I only have a picture of one of the stones, but GIA reports of both. BN has confirmed that both stones are "eye clean" and do not appear cloudy or hazy. I plan to insert whichever stone I buy into a solitaire platinum setting.

Here is the first stone (1.72 ct, J colour, VS1, 2.7 HCA) - CAD$11,389:

And here is the second stone (1.7 carat, E colour, SI1 clarity, 3.6 HCA) - CAD$ 10,962:

I've asked BN for a picture of the stone above. If that picture comes back clear, it seems to me like the second stone is better value (assuming the tradeoff in clarity is worth the substantial gain in colour).

What do you guys think?

I think these are both very different stones. What is more important to you? Color or clarity? The HCA on both of these is also higher than I would be interested in. I'm a newbie though so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. I'm sure the more knowledgeable members will jump in. :)

Thanks, Wholovesskunks.

TBH, I'm not sure what's more important (and I don't think my SO knows either!). I just want a stone that, objectively speaking, looks good, while staying within the 1.7 size range and the CAD$11k budget range. I realize this is a subjective exercise, but I've hit a bit of an impasse here and that's why I'm seeking other opinions :D

I can't find anything that is in budget at 1.7, CAD$11k ($8200 usd), eye-clean and well-cut.

Likewise.. I would call ID Jewelry and see what they can find you. They found for a friend of mine an amazing stone that was a J and just under 1.7ct right in your price range.

Otherwise, from the two stones I definitely prefer the 1st one. It is much more balanced in my view. It doesn't look bad in the photo and the fluorescence will help the color. It is questionable if the second one would be eye-clean and I am not a fan of that report from 2013..

Thanks for the advice everyone.

What about this option? 1.6 ct, I colour, VS1, 1.3 HCA for $CDN 11,966:

Is the extra brilliance worth the extra $$$? Separately, would the diamond look noticeably smaller than the 1.7 stones? I note the dimensions are close.

Thanks

Note that the 1.6 stone and the first 1.7 stone have almost the same face up dimensions meaning the 1.7 stone is a bit deeper than the 1.6. Do they have ASET or idealscope images we can look at?

Unfortunately not. I'm just working with the 360 images and the GIA reports.

To simplify, I've really narrowed my choices down to the first stone above (1.72 ct, J colour, VS1, 2.7 HCA for CAD$11,389), and this new stone (1.6 ct, I colour, VS1, 1.3 HCA for $CDN 11,966). Is it crazy to spend more on the smaller stone?

Is there a reason you are going through BN? Have you looked at James Allen, Brian Gavin, or Whiteflash?

The I color stone is more of a 60/60 cut stone but the crown angle of 32.5 is too low. I honestly am not a fan of either of the stones. I would either decrease my size requirement or increase my budget to get a very well cut diamond.

A little less size and a bit more money but a super ideal cut stone that is sure to wow her!

Thanks for the input! I'm curious as to why this example of a 60/60 stone represents a mediocre cut. From what I can tell, it meets the criteria for the second highest rating of 60/60 cuts from both the GIA (vg) and the AGS (1). I'm okay with not having the very best cut in the world, as long as the brilliance/fire is above average (which the HCA score suggests it would be). Based on my budget (and the importance of carat size to my SO), this stone still seems like a decent deal.

Am I at least correct that the third stone (1.6 ct, I colour, VS1, 1.3 HCA for $CDN 11,966) is better than the first stone (1.72 ct, J colour, VS1, 2.7 HCA for CAD$11,389)?

That third one the crown angle is way too low. You won't get fire out of that one. And I cannot see symmetry in the pavilion facets. Of these three, I like the first one, but like the others, I'd keep looking.

Okay, I'll rule the third stone out. For a complete newbie, this is very helpful!

Does this fourth stone look better than the first? Slightly more inclusions, but looks eye-clean: (1.7 ct, J colour, SI1, 1.1 HCA) - CAD$10,426:

This is much better! Cut wise it has nice proportions, a bit larger table, but nice spread. It will also have nice "fatter" arrows. As long as it is eye clean, I think it could be a true contender. I will let others chime in.

Thanks, SimoneDi. I confirmed with the AGS 59% table that this is an "ideal" cut.

Anyone else think this would be a decent choice (given size requirement, budget, etc.)?

Before pulling the trigger, I would absolutely love some additional input on whether the stone below seems like a good purchase: (1.7 ct, J colour, SI1, 1.1 HCA).

Can you post a picture of the stone head on, not tilted through the video

As noted above, I've been advised the stone is "eye-clean" (head-on, at a distance of 6-8 inches). Obviously the small dark inclusions in the table aren't ideal, but at this price point, I'm not expecting a perfect stone.
