As LawGem pointed out in another thread, the new Royal Assher is cut differently than the original Asshers cut by the Assher family ~ 100 years ago. The new Assher cut has considerably more facets and was been patented in the last couple of years.

My question is this: Why did the Assher family quit cutting the "old" shape? I''ve seen pics of some of the old stones and they have the telling checkerboard pattern. You''d think someone would be able to duplicate the "old" cut better than some of the so-called Asshers that are advertised on the net. These generic Asshers lack the concentric checkerboard pools alltogether and look more like simple emerald cuts.

Have the secrets of the old cut been lost? Maybe the old Asshers were so much inferior to the new Royal Asshers that Royal Assher won''t cut in the old style. Even if noone new will cut to the old Assher specs because the old Assher might be what I''ll call an "unregistered" patent, you''d think the Royal Assher company would still manufacture that cut. Heck, A Cut Above does it and their two cuts were devoloped just 10 years apart.

Maybe I''ll email them over at royalassher.com.

I can't give a definitive answer your question, but could hazard a guess. Modern customers seem to be more attracted by the sparkle that you get with a round. The Royal Asscher gives more sparkle than the original Asscher. Give the customer what they want - I guess.

Still, I don't know why they don't still offer the old style cut (or the 20's cut, for that matter). Do ask them, I'd love to know the answer!
