My boyfriend and I have been searching for an estate ring to use as an engagement ring. We found one that seems interesting, but it is 3 hrs away. It is a private seller and would like for us to come to see it. They do not seem comfortable with shipping it to a jeweler. I don''t really mind making the trip....I have two pictures but none show the detail of the diamond. i will post these and then the close ups as soon as I get them.

Can anyone please give me your opinion on this ring and let me know if I should be asking for more details before i make the trip up to see it?

there is no reason the seller should not agree to send the diamond to an agreed upon independent appraiser. since it would be wise of you to have the ring appraised anyway, this would eliminate a step in the process.

It looks like it has potential. Private sellers may not be aware of how often jewelry is sent to appraisers in retail & I can understand their apprehension.

Maybe you can set up an appointment to meet at an appraiser''s office near them or in the middle ... look at the stone in the waiting room & proceed with the appraisal if the ring looks promising in person. (I''d let the appraiser know you''d like to do this, so it wouldn''t be cancelling an appointment if you decide not to proceed).

It looks gorgeous in those pictures, I can''t wait to see close-ups and hear what you decide.

I have requested a meeting with an appraiser, so we will see what they say. Thanks for the advice on that. Does anyone know how to revise the subject line...I misspelled please...and I feel like an idiot!

I hope you manage to work something out with an appraiser, and it all checks out well, and you love it and, you know, take hand pics for us.

Good luck!!!

A couple of important details for your appraiser to verify...the carat weight and color of the diamond. Old Mine Cuts sometimes appear whiter in the mounting. I have seen my share of misgraded OMC diamonds with weights that are off. Your appraiser should be able to tell you everything you need to know to help you make the correct decision. Good luck and ask questions.
