I am new to this forum, have been lurking for a while but in desperate need of some advice. I have recently purchased an Asscher-cut stone from Blue Nile, 0.90 ct, F, VS1, depth 67.7, table 62, 5.26 x 5.20. It is set in their petite trellis mounting (pt).

The main issues I have with this stone are as follows:

1. There is a dark area in one of the sets of facets in the pavillion that creates a dark square that really bothers me. This area shows up in many different lighting conditions and is difficult for me to accept. See pic.

2. It is under 1 carat. This probably shouldn''t matter, but it does. Less of an issue than 1., but still bothers me. I am still in school, and I want to be happy with this stone in 10 years when I am actually making a significant amount of money. I can always upgrade, but I would rather not sink a whole bunch of money into something that is not at all an investment when I have other more serious financial responsibilities (ie kids, house, etc)

3. It looks like I will not get a chance to propose for at least a few weeks, which was not expected, due to changes in our plans. I have to return the item by 1/20 if I want to return it/she doesn''t like it.

I found out that I can increase my budget to about 6K, so I am looking to spend about 5K on the stone and 1K on the setting.

I realize now that when buying asschers that your eyes are the best judge. Therefore, I have a huge problem with trading this stone in for another with Blue Nile. I would rather just go with JA or GOG and be able to actually look at pics.

I haven''t seen anything on GOG that I like and fits my budget. There are a few on James Allen, despite the fact that I am not too thrilled with their settings. It is a 1.12 F SI1, 5.8 x 5.8 (not sure if it is eyeclean, waiting to hear back), which looks gorgeous, link to it is http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Asscher-Diamond-1271927.asp -- strange that it has been on the market since ''06, that worries me a little.

I like asschers that are more square and have a 5-step pavillion, which my current stone has (not sure if this matters too much). The JA one I put up doesn''t, but it has a nice hall of mirrors effect and a nice looking table area. I don''t really care too much about color and clarity (above SI and H are really my only requirements, I think), cut and carat top my list, in that order.

Should I return the ring to BN? Am I being to critical of the stone I currently have?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. Sorry for the long post.

I put the JA stone on hold to get an ASET image, not sure if people will be able to see the specs online so here they are. It is indeed eyeclean according to JA.

For GOG you may want to give them a call or send them an email with what you''re looking for. Many of their stones are purchased before they even have a chance of posting them.

I can't see clearly but the stone does look very dark....I would return it as you aren't happy and start over.

The JA asscher might be ok but its SI clarity and might not be eyeclean, you would need to ask James Allen but it is possible it won't be eyeclean, often these shapes need VS or above for clarity as they show inclusions more easily.

The JA stone is eyeclean, whatever that means to them. I would of course get the definition of that from JA before buying. Having a higher color grade does interest me, as I can tell a difference pretty easily. F seems to be a sweet spot for me for not seeing any color and not being overkill on the matter.

Hopefully the return will go easily, I am a bit nervous about that. But I need to be fully pleased with this purchase! As does she...

We''ll see what happens, I am sure it will come together.
