Asscher with compass setting?

Hi! I'm seeking advice about this compass-type setting for a 1 ct asscher (examples below). I like that it has a less square appearance and really shows off the asscher shape. A jeweler told me that because the corners are exposed this is not the most ideal setting method in terms of safety... but it seems to me that 4-prong round brilliants have a lot of exposure too (albeit no corners)?

1) Do you think this is safe?
2) Do you like the look?
3) Please post pics if you have one of these! :)

For reference, I'll be setting this on a simple thin platinum band. Thanks!

Thank you, super helpful! I love the satin finish, that's a great idea.

I would use David Klass for the setting. And I'd go for prongs like the one above on the left. Flat and wrapped around the stone. Not the one on the right.

Beautiful, I will definitely check him out. And I agree about the flat prongs. Thanks Gypsy :)

I don't have a problem with setting them that way as long as they have a reasonable girdle and no defects at the corners.

This forum is a lifesaver (choosing the right asscher is not easy! Especially online). I'm having anxiety about which of these two to choose (if any). Both are on reserve... any advice would be super appreciated. :wink2:

Either this one from James Allen (shows larger, but smaller corners and maybe too shallow?)

Is the crown too thin?

Or this one from Blue Nile (which I accidentally posted on someone else's thread :naughty:):

Can you get an ASET of the first one?

These both look like they have P3 facet or under table facet issues.

Thanks Gypsy, I asked for an ASET but they said they could not provide it. :(

Would the first be your preference? Or maybe should I keep searching...

No. I think I prefer the BN one. But it's photographed at an angle so I can't say it will look as nice head on.

Thanks again for your help, I took a chance and ordered it! Fingers crossed. At least BN has a good return policy...

Ok I was emailed a couple other options... http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/asscher-cut/1.21-carat-g-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-632971
It does appear a little dark in the middle, but the contrast changes as it moves. Is this a facet issue? I like that it shows larger than the BN 1.1ct, but perhaps it's not as pretty?

These two seem to have the same issues in the center. I will say, though, if your budget works for a 1.2 ct G VVS, I would definitely not go for a 1 ct asscher since you are setting it in a solitaire. I would keep looking until you can find a G VS1 or close to that around 1.2 cts and closer to 6mm.

Ok thanks! The 1.2 ct was a stretch... pretty over our budget.

It might be worth mentioning that my ring size is 3.75, and I plan on getting a very thin setting. Hopefully 1 ct will look decent?

This is the 1.01 ct asscher that I'm contemplating returning... fiance surprised me with this (we're not fond of how square it looks in this setting, which is why I'm looking for the compass setting - and an asscher with wider corners).

It's 5.73mm x 5.65mm, and looks larger than I thought it would on my finger. It's actually this one: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/asscher-cut/1.01-carat-f-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-939394

And this BN one I just ordered is only 5.67 x 5.63, so I'm wondering if it'll look much smaller, especially with the wide corners.

The F is pretty nice! I would have picked it out as having definite potential for an ASET.

Are you going to be able to compare then head to head?

That would be best.

Thanks! That's the plan... I should receive the BN diamond next Wednesday so I can compare them side by side. But there is a lot of fire in that F =)

Well... I'm finally wearing my asscher engagement ring! For some reason it feels enormous on my small hand (finger size 3.75). I'm sure I'll get used to it, right?? :)
