Hi! I'm a newbie to this forum though I've been reading and educating myself here for months. (Can I edit the title? in my zeal to create a thread, I must have hit enter prematurely) I was equally inept at the search, and managed to read almost every 2005/2006 post about asschers, and only stumbled on the 2008s today.

I am now completely overwhelmed with information. I've jotted down the basics, the %s, the cs etc. I am familiar with the IS red pictures. However just now I've seen those colored graph pics, and the extra fancy black and white pics and well I don't think I can retain any more information tonight.

I'd greatly appreciate any guidance, and apologise in advance for any newbie questions or incorrect terminology.

I am looking for an 1.2 - 1.55 asscher/square emerald. $12k is budgeted. I prefer an octagonal shape, but smaller windmills <- impossible? Like some other posters, I think pronounced windmills detract from the steps. I like both a bright drop & narrow step.

After reading so much I would be happy with a nicely cut stone. The only preferences are listed above. Bluenile does not provide pictures, are my only recourses gog, niceice etc? I am hesitant to go to a jeweler myself as to my relatively untrained eye, anything decent would look great to me. While that should satisfy me, I would like to purchase the best possible cut.

Thanks again for your help! (also for providing such a wealth of information; there are so many knowledgeable people on this forum. It's been a pleasure to read.) Sorry for such a long rambling post.

GOG seems to have the best selection of asschers with all the pictures available. I found mine through WF but had to have 3 called in from other sources. They took pictures and sent them to me with their opinion of which was the nicest. Even when you purchase a stone you still can return it (every vendor has a slightly different return policy). The only was to find out if you love an asscher is to see it in person but only after you''ve weeding out the bad ones. Finding the perfect asscher takes some patience.

Post pictures, numbers, links and prices here on PS and you will get feedback.

Thanks Swingirl! I''ve visited area jewelers, and asschers are few and far between. The jeweler where I will be purchasing my setting was able to secure an asscher after a few days, and it''s a beautiful stone. It does not have an idealscope pic - should I request one? To be honest it is very brilliant and I can barely see past the flash to study the pattern.

I could keep up with all the information in the posts from earlier years, the wide step, bright drop, narrow step etc, and could follow along with people''s recommended choices etc. However at this point they are all looking the same to me.

I searched on GOG (excellent pics!) but they do not have the size I am looking for. How often do they receive new inventory?

Welcome Clop!

If you can, take some pics of the Asccher you are considering ( don't use the flash and use macro mode on the camera) and post so that Storm can take a look.

Regarding GOG, it can be best to tell Jon what you are looking for and let him source you a kicken Asscher ( as we say around here!), as he has many contacts and may be able to locate one for you.

what type of setting do you want? i only ask b/c pearlmans has a ton of Daniel K asscher rings in their closeout section right now, a few are in the size/price you are looking at.

ETA: i do agree that telling Jon at GOG exactly what you are looking for is a great idea if you've got time to have him look.

good advise so far.
Wide corners means it should have wide windmills they go hand in hand.

The red/green/blue/black pictures are aset images, the faq section has several threads on it.
The black and white images are computer generated models.
Too see the patterns you need too be in diffused lighting not in spot lighting like typical jewelery store lighting.
either move out from under the spot lights or block them with your hand.

Thanks Lorelei! Will do. I called GOG this morning, and spoke with someone, not Jon though, who was very nice and helpful. I gave him my information, and he said they would look around. He did recommend the 1.23 on the website and that is a gorgeous stone. Does it pass everyone''s muster here? Initially I thought I would be budgeted for a <= 1 ct Asscher, but now that it''s been increased and I''ve been spoiled by the 1.53 I''ve seen, I''d like more comparisons.

Thanks mrssalvo for pointing me to pearlmans! Am going to take a gander. Daniel K''s designs are spectacular!

My ideal setting ranges quite widely. I''m deciding between the following and would love any opinions:
-plain platinum (prongs/head etc still to be decided, but as invisible as possible)
-pave on the ring (3rd choice)
-daniel k/ritani endless love type halo, pave on ring

2mm band or thinner. My finger size is 4.5

One of my absolute fave Asscher settings. Plus if you went smaller, it would still give nice coverage.

this is one of my favorite asscher settings for someone who likes pave:
This one is by WF and there are similar rings elsewhere.
For wifey2d id drop the pave in the shank or replace it with rubies.

Hi thank you strmrdr! I will continue reading and hopefully come back with options that can be deemed a strmworthy kicken asscher.

Ellen, thank you for sharing that thread, that is a stunningly gorgeous ring!! I''ve been lurking primarily in RockyTalky, but will definitely migrate over to Show Me the Ring to narrow down settings/designs.

ooh thank you strmrdr! I bookmarked an earlier thread where you posted those pics as an example of what to look for/possible choice.

I am partial to micropave where the diamonds cannot really be individually seen, and appear more like 'glitter' from afar. ETA: Nevermind, the pic on the bottom right corner is stunning. I think I'm just not used to clear photography
