Asscher or Round Brilliant?

We are currently looking for an engagement ring, and I''m undecided as to whether I prefer an asscher or round brilliant. We are looking at around a 2 carat size stone. I''m just curious to see what most people would prefer, and why ...

I preferred an Asscher when I started looking for my upgrade. But after realizing how small they faced up vs. the same ct. size of a round, I picked a round. I wore a very small stone for 24 years, I wanted size.

Plus, Asschers are so hard to keep clean, as are step cuts in general, and I just didn''t want to deal with it on a daily basis.

I dream of getting an Asscher RHR someday....

I have an asscher, but for the last couple of days I''ve had my mother''s RB and I''ve been wearing it on my RH and MAN... sparkle and spread and it just is so much more attention grabbing!

Spread, and fire are the reasons I chose RB in your poll.

My e-ring diamond is a 1.6 rb, but I''d love to have a 2 ct. asscher for a right hand ring since it would be comparable in size to my round stone. I''d say it depends on how you want to set it. I sort of like asschers with a split shank setting, and I like that better for a right hand ring than an e-ring.

Asshers are gorgous and very elegant, but square stones just don''t look good on my hands! I also love the brilliance of round stones and I can''t imagine an Assher satisfying me long-term.

LOL!! I voted for asscher as well... mostly because there is a part of me that is just so tired of rounds. But take that with salt because my next diamond will be round LOL

Definitely Asscher! I prefer square stones over round any day (I have a princess). Sure, it will face up smaller than a round, but with a 2ct stone, that wouldn''t matter to me. It would look huge anyway!

In all seriousness, this is such a difficult question. A round will be very large and the sparkle will be super crazy/flashy. The asscher will be smaller but then at 2 carats, the steps will be large enough to be visible without squinting so that one can go crazy looking into those concentric square steps. It will also be a very classy and elegant stone (high class looking). If you can find an asscher that mimics the RA look, that''ll be my choice.

I voted asscher. I have an asscher and I LOVE it. First time I ever saw an asscher, I knew it was the cut of stone for me. Just took my breath away. I love that it is so symmetrical and has such clean lines. I love that it is relatively unique. I love how deep it looks. I can just stare into it and get kind of lost.

BUT there are a number of folks on here that have had asschers and decided they wanted something with more sparkle, more brilliance and more size - so they traded in the asscher and got something else. And I do kind of understand why...but I just love this cut.

There is just no getting around the fact that asschers face up small, are hard to keep clean, and don''t sparkle like a round.

So unless you are really feeling the asscher love, you''ll probably be happier in the long run with a round.

Honestly... in re-thinking? A flanders or Jubilie or Lucre at 2 carats would be my first choice if I were trying to combine the two.

Someone on here has the most AMAZING 2 carat Flanders (linky?)... gorgeous. Different. And arresting.

I love the look of asschers in pictures, but I''m never impressed with their sparkle, appearance, or size in person. I''d get a round. It will look big, bright, and sparkly.

Have you tried on both in person? We are talking pretty different animals here!! The asscher is step cut while the rb is brilliant cut. Very different kinds of sparkle. Also, the asscher will face up smaller than a round of the same weight. I definitely advocate seeing both in person before making the decision. You might not be as undecided afterwards. One may strike you more than the other.

So true, and that''s what makes a lot of us buy something else.

You mentioned looking at 2 cts.

To give you an idea, a rounds diameter at that size will be approximately 8.2

I looked up an Asscher, 2.03, and it measured exactly 7.15. BIG difference....

That is a really good point! I adore Flanders and Lucere cuts. I think the Lucere does a really good job of combining the classic lines of a step cut with the brillance of a round. Good Old Gold gets some nice ones every now and then. They don''t have any Flanders, and their only Jubilee is 1.14 J I1, but here''s a gorgeous 2ct Lucere:

I am going through the same debate myself. I LOVE the Asscher's uniqueness and flash I've seen from across the room, but also LOVE the type of sparkle from an RB! I think without either I would feel like I was missing something, but I'm not crazy about an Asscher center with RB sidestones. I've been obsessing on how a design with a 3-stone RB center and Asscher sides OR a 5-stone Asscher center with trapezoid (or baguette) and RB BUT maybe the Lucere is a nice solution! Something to consider! The people here on PS have been very helpful (I'm new here too) and I am sure you will find them to be helpful also. Good luck in making your decision and hopefully you will make it quicker/easier than I am!!!

Not to hijack this, but maybe this quick question will be helpful to pomjuice as well: On the link to the Lucere, the Megascope pic shows the firetrace with "ideal" BFS results... does this mean "ideal" in the realm of "Lucere diamonds" or diamonds in general regardless of cut???

I think you''re either a step cut person or you aren''t, really. I went into a Cartier store once and the man took out a RB ring with pave and honest to god, grabbed it and started flashing it going back and forth saying "See? It''s just like headlights when you walk down 5th Avenue in this baby!"
Um, maybe I don''t WANT to wear a headlight?


I also am not a size person in rings...my center stone faces up really, really small for its tcw and I loooove it.


OTOH, the sparkle of a well done RB is lovely.

I recently received a 2.11 RA that I love. Just saw it at the local jeweler and knew it was for me. I looked at RB in the same size and just preferred the RA even though it faces up smaller (7.34 X 7.35). Love the concentric octogons that make a beautiful pattern - sometimes I feel like I am looking into a deep pool of water other times I see the steps of a Mayan temple. I get lots of sparkle out of my ring, especially after it has been cleaned. What I noticed in looking at other Asschers (all generic) is that there is much variability in the actual look - you really need to see them in person.

BTW - my original engagement ring is a 1 carat round brilliant.

I think seeing them in person and finding out which one really speaks to you is the only way to know. I agree that most either are step-cut lovers or they aren''t. Or at least have a very strong preference for an e-ring. Most asscher e-ring owners around here would never ever choose a round so they are willing to sacrifice size for the mile deep richness of an asscher. Where round lovers go for all the things that make rounds so popular. which one makes your heart pitter patter...

Although Asschers do face-up smaller than equivalent weight RBs, the difference is not as great as simple L x W measurements suggest. The face-up dimensions for an Asscher correspond to its length and width, but ignore its diagonal length. The diagonal length can be much greater than the length or width, depending on how deeply cut the corners are. Thus, a 7 x 7 mm Asscher faces up larger than a 7 x 7 mm RB.
